Bruins in Virginia for National Team Indoors
The No. 5 UCLA women's tennis team is competing at one of the biggest events of the season this week, as the Bruins are in Charlottesville, Va. for the USTA/ITA National Team Indoors, which runs from Feb. 7-10 at the Boar's Head Tennis Club. UCLA is seeded No. 4 and opens up the 16-team event against Texas on Friday at 12:30 p.m. (PST). If the Bruins win they will meet either fifth-seeded USC or Alabama in the quarterfinals on Saturday. UCLA at the National Team Indoors
The Bruins have played in the final of the National Team Indoors the last two seasons, winning their first-ever title in 2012 (def. Duke, 4-0) and falling in the final in 2013 (l. to North Carolina, 4-3). UCLA was a runner-up at the event in both 1990 and 1995. A complete history of the National Team Indoors can be found HERE.
UCLA qualified for the National Team Indoors following a pair of victories during ITA Kick-Off Weekend at the Los Angeles Tennis Center in late January. The Bruins downed San Diego, 4-0 in the first round and then followed that up with a 4-1 victory over TCU in the championship match.
UCLA in the ITA Rankings
Due to the National Team Indoors, new national rankings were not released this week. Instead, new team and individual rankings will be released on the Tuesday following Indoor competition (Jan. 11). As a team, UCLA ranks No. 5 in the nation behind Stanford, Florida, North Carolina and Georgia. Individually, Robin Anderson is ranked No. 1 in the nation in both singles and doubles (w/Jennifer Brady). Following Anderson in singles for UCLA is Chanelle Van Nguyen at No. 9. Other Bruin players ranked in singles are Brady (No. 24) and Kyle McPhillips (No. 36). In addition to being ranked No. 1 with Anderson in doubles, Brady is also ranked No. 13 with Catherine Harrison. No. 2 Bruins Head to Bay Area
The second-ranked UCLA men's tennis team (5-0) hits the road this week, traveling up to the Bay Area for matches against St. Mary's on Saturday at Noon and No. 38 Stanford on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. A live stream of Sunday's UCLA-Stanford clash will be provided for free on Stanford's official athletic website www.gostanford.com.
The Bruins are coming off of a pair of wins last week at the Pac-12/SEC Challenge, held at USC's Marks Tennis Stadium. The Bruins dispatched of No. 11 Florida, 4-1 on Saturday afternoon and came back the following day to down No. 3 Georgia, 4-3 in a thrilling contest decided at No. 6 singles. Bruin freshman Joseph Di Giulio won that deciding match, downing Hernus Pieters, 6-0, 5-6(7), 6-4 to secure the 4-3 victory for UCLA. The two victories on the weekend improved the Bruins' record to 5-0 on the year.
In the Rankings
UCLA remaind at No. 2 in the country in the latest ITA Team Rankings released on Tuesday. The Bruins trail No. 1 Virginia. USC, Georgia and Ohio State round out the top 5. Individual rankings will be released again next week. In the latest individual rankings released on Jan. 2, senior Clay Thompson was ranked No. 1 in the nation in singles. He is followed by No. 11 Marcos Giron, No. 62 Mackenzie McDonald, No. 64 Karue Sell and No. 120 Gage Brymer. Giron and McDonald are ranked No. 10 in doubles. Complete rankings can be found HERE.
