UCLA 80, Utah 66
February 15, 2014

UCLA head coach Steve Alford
“I'm extremely pleased with our guys. We took it to another level today. I really liked our intensity for about 32 minutes, defensively. We showed enormous progress there. We made it really difficult for Utah. We came out strong at halftime again. We are really starting to develop something there. Neither team came out strong out of the gates to start the game, but we did a good job defensively to start the second half and went on a 10-0 scoring run. That is what really gave us the separation.”

on guard Jordan Adams
“Jordan Adams was terrific. He really moved well. He did a good job moving without the basketball. Sometimes he gets in a hurry, but he got in good rhythm tonight. He took really good shots, and he was strong defensively for us.”

on UCLA’s multi-faceted scoring attack
“Kyle Anderson was great with another double-double. Dave and Travis Wear have really been doing what they need to do. The bench was great, and Tony Parker gave us good minutes in the second half. This team loves it, they compete and they want to win. We have really good trust. They trust each other. We haven't been hurried and haven't rushed into bad shots and bad passes. Utah is a really great shooting team, and we held them to around 40 percent shooting.”

on improving in the coming weeks
“If we can continue to improve defensively as the season goes on, we have a legitimate shot at winning some big ball games. We have a very difficult road trip, and we have a lot of work ahead of us. As we draw closer and closer to March, we're just trying to become a better basketball team.”

UCLA guard Jordan Adams
“Coach told me to stay aggressive. They had a match-up zone, so I knew where to get my spots. If I have a bad shooting night, I put it behind me. I was focused for this game because we have played them before and they beat us. I knew what I needed to do.”

on his mindset heading into today’s game
“You really have to be focused. Every team in the Pac-12 can beat each other. Today was about me figuring out what to do – I just wanted to cut to open areas on the court.”

UCLA guard Kyle Anderson
“Coach told us that the famous teams of the Lakers and the Bulls always made a statement in the third quarter. We came out in the second half and the first four minutes we made some stops and made some plays.”

on UCLA’s offense when Jordan Adams scores
“When Jordan is making shots, it’s so easy because he cuts so well. It makes it easier for other guys to get open looks since the defense is focusing on him.”

UCLA guard Norman Powell
“Our defense is about effort. We always want to be in help defense mode. This is what we’ve picked up over the last several games. guys have bought into it. This is what Coach Alford preaches to us.”

Utah head coach Larry Krystkowiak
“They [UCLA] put some heat on us in the second half, and it kind of demoralized us. It was one of those kind of spurts where they were playing hard, and they brought some of the offensive energy down to the defensive side as well. They had a burst and we didn’t. We were playing from behind, and I am proud of our guys for not giving up.

“Our first half was actually pretty good. We gave up nine points off turnovers early and played them tough for the rest of the first half. When you are playing a team like UCLA, the margin of error is pretty slim. Their number five guys can come out and hit the three, and that is very difficult to defend.”

Utah guard Delon Wright
“We didn’t come out and play as aggressively as we needed to play. I kind of let the game come to me, and that’s a bad thing. We were only down by two but at the beginning of the second half, we couldn’t get a stop and we couldn’t score. When both of those things happen at the same time, that’s bad for us. We just had a bad game and now we have to bounce back. We would like to get two home wins against Arizona and Arizona State.”

Utah forward Jordan Loveridge
“In the second half, their players just scored and made plays. When you have guys like Adams and Anderson getting hot, it’s tough to beat that team. We’re not satisfied going one and one on this road trip. We thought we could beat this team. It sucks leaving like this.”
