The sixth-ranked Bruins open their 2014 season on Thursday against Cal State Northridge. The match, which will take place at Annenberg Beach House in Santa Monica, will start at 3:30 p.m.

UCLA returns five players who saw action during its inaugural season in 2013, senior Meg Norton, juniors Karsta Lowe and Zoë Nightingale and sophomores Karly Drolson and Rachel Inouye, in addition to sophomore Haley Lawless, who did not play last year.

Among the newcomers from the 2013 women's volleyball team are senior Madie Smith and freshmen Skylar Dykstra, Jennie Frager, Jessyka Ngauamo and Jordan Robbins. Transferring into the Bruin program are sophomores Taylor Formico (UC Santa Barbara) and Kamila Tan (UC San Diego).

The Bruins, under second year head coach Stein Metzger and assistants Jenny Johnson Jordan and Sarah Straton, were 3-7 in dual matches last season. UCLA had a pair of teams reach the 2013 AVCA National Championships, Norton and Kelly Reeves, as well as Nightingale and Becca Strehlow. Reeves became the first Bruin to earn AVCA All-America honors last year.

Cal State Northridge will be playing its inaugural match after the program was announced in January.

Following Thursday's match, the Bruins head to Irvine Valley College to square off with IVC at 9 a.m. and Bakersfield at 11 a.m.
