Junior catcher Shane Zeile has been named the Pac-12 Player of the Week for March 3-9, as announced by Conference office on Tuesday.
Zeile, who last week was also named to the Johnny Bench Award Watch List for the nation's top collegiate catcher, had a huge weekend for the Bruins, batting .600 (8-12) with four RBI. He recorded at least one hit in all four games last week and has now reached base safely in his last nine games. He had a career day for the Bruins on Friday vs. Pepperdine, going 3-5 with a career-high three runs scored and four RBI, including a double and his first home run of the year. He followed that up with a 4-4 performance in UCLA’s 6-5 win over USC on Sunday, scoring two runs in the contest. His four hits in that game were also a new career-high. Overall, Zeile leads the Bruins with a .431 batting average and a .549 slugging percentage, which are good for third and fifth-best in the Pac-12 respectively. He also has a team-high 11 RBI, 22 hits and a .524 on-base percentage.
This is Zeile’s first-career Pac-12 Player of the Week honor and UCLA’s 56th all-time selection.
UCLA (8-7) is back in action tonight as the Bruins will take on UC Irvine (12-3) at 6 p.m. out Jackie Robinson Stadium. The Bruins will then open up conference play this weekend with a three-game series at California from Friday, March 14 to Sunday, March 16. Game times are 7 p.m., 6 p.m. and 2 p.m. respectively.
