Release:  03/18/2014
UCLA sophomore attacker Rachel Fattal was nominated recently for the 2013 Sullivan Award based on her outstanding performance as a freshman last year.

Last season Fattal helped the Bruins claim a third place finish in the NCAA Championships, where she was honored as the MPSF Newcomer of the Year after scoring 68 goals. She joined Team USA after the season and made her FINA World Championship debut in Barcelona, where she helped the Senior National Team to a fifth place finish. Following that performance she was named the Most Valuable Player of the FINA Junior World Championships, leading Team USA to its first gold medal since 2005. Fattal scored 15 goals, including four against both Italy and Greece. For her efforts, she was mentioned in Sports Illustrated’s Faces in the Crowd.

This season, Fattal has scored 24 goals with 29 assists in 19 games. She leads the team with 29 steals and 13 field blocks. The Bruins are 17-2 overall and ranked No. 2 in the nation.

The James E. Sullivan Award honors the nation's outstanding amateur athlete. Past winners from UCLA include Olympic gold medalists Rafer Johnson (1960), Jackie Joyner Kersee (1986) and Florence Griffith Joyner (1988), and long jump world record holder Mike Powell (1991) as well as basketball Hall of Famer Bill Walton (1973).
