SEATTLE - Junior Stephany LaRosa drove in a pair of runs, sophomore Allexis Bennett posted a pair of hits and junior Ally Carda struck out eight and retired the last 12 batters of the game to help the top-ranked Bruins defeat #5 Washington 4-2 on Saturday at Husky Softball Stadium.

The Bruins improve to 27-1 overall and 4-0 in Pac-12 play, while the Huskies fall to 20-6 and 1-2 in league action.

In the complete-game effort, Carda gave up two unearned runs, four hits and three walks to move to 16-1 on the season. UCLA had six hits as a team.

Carda escaped a jam in the bottom of the first. Victoria Hayward led off with a bunt single to the left side and moved to second on a Hooch Fagaly sacrifice. Kaitlin Inglesby followed with a tapper back to Carda, who went to third to get Hayward, but the throw was late to allow runners at the corners. Kylee Lahners grounded one to third, as sophomore Mysha Sataraka looked Hayward back and got the second out at first. Carda then struck out Ali Aguilar to end the threat.

UCLA crossed home plate three times in its half of the third. Bennett hit a full-swing squibber that died in front of the third baseman for a one-out infield single, Carda was hit by a pitch and freshman Delaney Spaulding walked to load the bases. With LaRosa up, a passed ball brought home Bennett with the game’s first run, as Carda and Spaulding each moved up a base. LaRosa then hit a screaming liner off the Washington first baseman’s glove into right field for a two-run single, as Carda and Spaulding came home to make it 3-0.

The Huskies cut the gap with two in their half of the third. Hayward led off with a walk, one out later, Inglesby reached on an error by Sataraka and Lahners singled to center to load the bases. Aguilar was hit by a pitch to force home Hayward with Washington’s first run. One out later, Kimberlee Myers walked to bring in Inglesby to make it 3-2.

Washington had a chance to get the equalizer in the fourth, with a leadoff single for Kelli Suguro and a walk to Hayward, but both would be stranded, as Carda began a game-ending streak of 12 straight retired. The junior struck out two in the fifth and two more in the seventh to close the contest.

UCLA added an insurance run in the seventh. Carda led off with a single to left, moved to second on a passed ball and scored on a single up the middle by Spaulding to make it 4-2.

The Bruins and the Huskies are back at it on Sunday at 3 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on Pac-12 Networks.
