UCLA Track and Field Post Impressive Marks in Season Opener

LOS ANGELES – The UCLA track and field team opened its outdoor campaign with some impressive performances, Saturday in a dual meet against Washington State at Drake Stadium.

Despite dropping both contests to the Cougars, the Bruins compiled notable marks early in the season, including lifetime bests and all-time top-10 performances.

On the women’s side Jaycee Olsen won two events and placed second in another to score key points for the Bruins. Olsen won the hammer with a lifetime best of 160-5 to etch her name 10th on the all-time top-10 list. She also won the discus with a mark of 142-0 and placed second in the shot put with a 38-2.

In her first steeplechase of her UCLA career Sabrina Seay cracked the top-10 all time with a 10:57.75. Also busting into the top-10 in her UCLA debut was Zaybree Haury in the javelin with a throw of 143-9 that now ranks fourth all-time.

Earning wins for the Bruins was Bronte Golick in the 5,000m with a meet record time of 16:51.91. Trinity Wilson won the 100 hurdles in a photo finish with a time of 13.84. Sydney Lewis claimed the 100m with a time of 11.98 while Ally Courtnall won the 400m with a 55.72.

In the field, Alexis Walker won the high jump with a leap of 5-8.75 while Natasha Kolbo cleared 13-1.50 to win the pole vault. Maya Brown opened the day with a 19-2 to win the long jump.

The men also put up their share of memorable marks, led by Nick Hartle in the 800m. Hartle blitzed the two-laps in a lifetime best of 1:47.51 which ranks sixth all-time at UCLA and was a meet record.

In the javelin Cody Danielson also cracked the top-10 and set a meet record with a lifetime best throw of 217-1 which now ranks ninth all-time. Cody Crampton cleared a lifetime best 7-2.50 in the high jump to tie for sixth all-time at UCLA and set a meet record.

Nicholas Scarvelis set a lifetime best with a 62-5.75 to win the shot put. Also in the throws, collegiate record holder Julian Wruck got his season started with a win in the discus with a mark of 212-1. Alec Faldermeyer won the hammer with a throw of 189-7.

Also in the field Mike Woepse won the pole vault with a clearance of 16-10.75. Michael Perry won the long jump with a leap of 23-4.75.

On the track, Pete Lauderdale won the 400m with a time of 47.08. He also helped guide the 4x400m relay to a win with a 3:10.93.

Next week UCLA will head to the 87th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays and also send a group to the Cal Poly Invitational. The Texas Relays are slated to begin on Wednesday, March 26 while the Cal Poly Invite is scheduled for Saturday, March 29.
