LOS ANGELES - Junior Stephany LaRosa had two hits and a pair of runs batted in, while freshman Gabrielle Maurice also had two hits with three RBI, as the second-ranked Bruins defeated Oregon State 8-4 on Thursday at Easton Stadium.
The Bruins improve to 37-4 overall and 10-3 in Pac-12 play, while the Beavers fall to 13-24 and 3-11 in league action.
UCLA had 11 hits as a team, with eight different players recording at least one, including sophomore Allexis Bennett, who had two hits.
In the circle, junior Ally Carda recorded the win to move to 22-2 on the season. She struck out nine in a complete game, allowing four runs, nine hits and three walks. Carda had a 1-2-3 inning in the first, struck out two in the second, three in the fourth and two more in the seventh.
The Bruins scored twice in their first at-bat. With one out, freshman Delaney Spaulding drew a walk and LaRosa singled her to third with a hit to right field. After a walk to sophomore Mysha Sataraka loaded the bases, Maurice singled through the right side to plate Spaulding and LaRosa with the game’s first two runs.
Oregon State got one back in the second. With one out, Alexis Gonzalez walked and Kylie Padilla singled to right-center. One out later, Isabelle Batayola doubled to left to score Gonzalez, but the Bruins would retire Padilla between second and third to end the inning.
UCLA equaled that run in its half of the second. Senior Alyssa Tiumalu walked and was pinch-run for by freshman Robyn Corruth, who moved to second on a slap infield single by Bennett, to third on a Carda sacrifice and scored on a Spaulding ground out to third to make it 3-1.
The Bruins tacked on their fourth run in the fifth. LaRosa walked to open the frame and was pinch-run for by junior Jessica Amaral, who moved to second on a Sataraka single to left. One out later, sophomore Brittany Moeai tapped to second, as Amaral moved to third and Sataraka advanced to second. Freshman Jelly Felix followed with an infield single to third to plate Amaral to extend the Bruins’ lead to three.
UCLA scored four times in the sixth to break it open. Back-to-back singles by Bennett and Carda opened the inning, with junior Sam Duran coming in to run for Carda. A single through the left side by Spaulding scored Bennett to make it 5-1. LaRosa followed with a double to right-center to score Duran and Spaulding with runs six and seven, as LaRosa took third on the throw home. One out later, Maurice grounded slowly to the right side, but it was enough to drive in LaRosa to make it 8-1.
The Beavers clawed back with three runs in the seventh. With one out, Batayola singled, and one out later, Kori Nishitomi and Ya Garcia singled to load the bases. Dani Gilmore would clear the bases with a double down the right-field line to cut the deficit to 8-4, but Carda would retire CJ Chirichigno on a pop up to end the game.
