The UCLA Baseball team was shut out by Stanford on Saturday night, falling to Cardinal, 5-0, at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

John Hochstatter (7-1) earned the win for Stanford, pitching a complete game shutout. Hochstatter allowed five hits and struck out three in his nine innings of work. Junior Grant Watson (4-7) suffered the loss for UCLA, giving up four runs on eight hits in seven innings pitched. Watson struck out three as well.

Stanford jumped out to the early in lead in the top of the second with two runs off of Watson. With two outs, Watson hit Jack Klein before allowing a single to Dominic Jose. A wild pitch moved the runners up to second and third for Brant Whiting, who singled up the middle to score Klein and Jose and put the Cardinal on top, 2-0.

Hochstatter held the Bruins scoreless for the next three innings, and in the top of the fifth the Cardinal added another run to increase their lead to three. Again with two outs, Danny Diekroeger singled to Pat Gallagher at first before stealing second. Austin Slater then drove him in with another single up the middle to make it 3-0 Stanford. The Cardinal tacked on another run in the sixth when Whiting singled home Klein from third to put Stanford ahead by four.

Hochstatter continually kept the UCLA offense at bay before Stanford scored again in the ninth. After Brett Michael Doran reached on an error with two outs against freshman Grant Dyer, Alex Blandino singled him home to give the Cardinal a five-run lead. The Bruins were unable to score any runs in the bottom half of the inning and they fell to Stanford by that 5-0 score.

Junior Shane Zeile led UCLA at the plate with a 2-3 night while freshman Luke Persico and sophomores Trent Chatterton and Christoph Bono provided the other hits for UCLA.

UCLA (23-20-1, 10-10 Pac-12) and Stanford (20-20, 8-12 Pac-12) will finish their three-game series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Sophomore Cody Poteet (3-2) will take the mound for the Bruins in the series finale.
