Vikings Select Barr As NFL Draft Kicks Off On Thursday

LOS ANGELES - The 79th NFL Player Draft will be held over a three-day period beginning on Thursday, May 8 with the first round of selections. UCLA’s linebacker Anthony Barr and offensive lineman Xavier Su’a-Filo have been projected by numerous analysts and draft experts to be first-round picks this year. Three other Bruins, wide receiver Shaq Evans, defensive end Cassius Marsh and linebacker Jordan Zumwalt, were invited to the NFL Combine and the major college All-Star Games and will also be hoping to hear their names called during the seven-round event.

The draft, which is being held in New York’s Radio City Music Hall, will be televised by both ESPN/ESPN2 and the NFL Network starting at 5 p.m. PT on Thursday. The second and third rounds of the draft will be broadcast on Friday, May 9 at 4 p.m. PT. Rounds four through seven will take place on Saturday, May 10, starting at 9 a.m. PT. The event will also be streamed over WatchESPN and NFL.com. There will be 256 selections, in all, by the 32 NFL teams.

UCLA's All-Time NFL Draft Picks

NFL teams have made 29 UCLA player selections in the first round of the draft, dating back to Cal Rossi in 1947, the No. 4 overall pick by the Redskins. The most recent first-round selection was last year by Green Bay, which grabbed Datone Jones with the 26th pick of the initial round. In five previous drafts, UCLA has had multiple players selected in round one –-- 1947 – Cal Rossi, Washington-No. 4/ Ernie Case, Green Bay-No. 6; 1961 – Jimmy Johnson, San Francisco-No. 6/ Bill Kilmer, San Francisco-No. 11; 1974 – Bill Sandifer, San Francisco-No. 10/ Fred McNeill, Minnesota-No. 17; 1979 – Manu Tuiasosopo, Seattle-No. 18/ Jerry Robinson, Philadelphia-No. 21; 1981 – Freeman McNeil, New York Jets-No. 3/ Kenny Easley, Seattle-No. 4. Quarterback Troy Aikman is the sole Bruin to be taken with the first overall pick in the draft (1989).

UCLA had four players selected overall in last year’s draft. In addition to the first-round selection of Jones by the Packers, Green Bay also picked running back Johnathan Franklin in the fourth round. The Minnesota Vikings chose punter Jeff Locke in round five and offensive guard Jeff Baca in round six. The last time the Bruins had more than four players selected in the draft was in 2002 – linebacker Robert Thomas (rd. 1), running back DeShaun Foster (2), safety Marques Anderson (3), defensive lineman Kenyon Coleman (5), tight end Bryan Fletcher (6), long snapper Jeff Grau (7).
