WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Junior Ally Carda was named Pac-12 Conference Pitcher of the Week for the third time this season on Monday after leading the Bruins to a pair of victories at Arizona State last weekend.
Carda pitched 17 2/3 of the Bruins' 22 innings last weekend, earning two wins and striking out 21 to help UCLA secure a series victory.
Carda suffered a hard-luck loss on Thursday, despite nine strikeouts. She fanned a pair in the first, second, third and fifth innings, while recording a 1-2-3 frame in the fourth. Carda allowed six hits, two walks and two runs, but a first-inning homer proved to be the difference in a 2-0 loss.
On Friday, Carda pitched a full game in relief, striking out eight in seven innings and allowing three runs, five hits and five walks. Coming into the game in the third, she had a 1-2-3 inning in her first frame, striking out a pair in the sixth, eighth and ninth frames.
On Saturday, Carda won her 29th game of the year, striking out four in 4 2/3 innings of shutout relief, allowing only a hit and three walks. She retired the first nine batters she faced.
Carda leads the Bruins with a 1.74 earned run average, a 29-4 record and 210 strikeouts in 197 1/3 innings.
Carda was also named Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 25 and March 25, and her honor on Monday gives UCLA 58 Pac-10/12 Pitcher of the Week awards all-time.
The Bruins conclude the regular season with nine Pac-12 weekly honors, the most in the conference. UCLA won Pac-12 Player of the Week five times, with junior Stephany LaRosa (March 31 and April 21) and sophomore Mysha Sataraka (Feb. 25 and March 17) each winning twice and senior Alyssa Tiumalu earning the award on Feb. 11.
Carda won three of the Bruins' four Pitcher of the Week honors. Senior Jessica Hall received the accolade on April 21.
