LOS ANGELES – The UCLA track and field team will send 27 athletes and two relay teams to the NCAA West Regional Championships that will be held at John McDonnell Field in Fayetteville, Ark. The prelims will start on Thursday, May 29 and conclude on Saturday, May 31.
The first event for the Bruins will be the women’s javelin where freshman Zaybree Haury will start off the meet at 10 a.m. PT on Thursday. The last event of the meet for UCLA will be Kelsey Smith in the 5,000m on Saturday at 6:45 p.m. PT.
The NCAA West Preliminaries is the first and second rounds of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The semifinals and finals of the NCAA Championships will take place June 11-14 in Eugene, Ore.
The men enter the meet ranked No. 22 in the nation in the latest USTFCCCA ranking. Several Bruins are in position to advance to Eugene. In the discus seniors Julian Wruck and Matt Kosecki have the top two marks in the region as Wruck has thrown 213-3 and Kosecki has a mark of 196-8.
Senior Mike Woepse has the second best clearance in the pole vault with a mark of 18-5.25 while sophomore Nick Hartle is in good position in the 800m with the third best time of 1:47.51. Also in the top-10 in the region is the Pac-12 champion in the shot put, sophomore Nicholas Scarvelis. He has a best of 64-4.50 and ranks sixth in the region. Freshman Cody Crampton has cleared 7-2.50 in the high jump to rank 10th.
On the women’s side, Kylie Price is ranked second in the long jump with a mark of 21-1.25. Junior Alexis Walker ranks fourth in the high jump with a leap of 5-11.50. She has already punched her ticket to Eugene in the heptathlon. Senior Natasha Kolbo is ranked seventh in the pole vault after she cleared a personal best 13-10.50 at the Pac-12 Championships.
