Women's tennis player Robin Anderson was named the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for May 19-25, and Kyle McPhillips' match point to wrap up UCLA's NCAA team title was selected as the Play of the Week.
Anderson was instrumental in helping the Bruins capture their second NCAA title in Athens, Ga. last week. The Bruin junior went 3-0 at the No. 1 singles position in Georgia, registering a straight-set win over top-ranked Jamie Loeb of North Carolina in the title match. Anderson and partner Jennifer Brady also picked up three big doubles wins for the Bruins in the team's march to the championship. Following the team event, Anderson was named the NCAA Tournament's Most Outstanding Player. She is currently ranked No. 2 nationally in singles and No. 1 in doubles with Brady.
McPhillips battled UNC's Caroline Price on court No. 3 with the championship on the line as the teams were tied at 3-3. McPhillips was able go up a break late in the set to take a 5-3 lead but while serving for the match quickly got down 0-40. She stayed steady, however, chipping away at Price's lead to eventually get the game back to deuce. McPhillips fought off two more break points, and Price saved three match points before McPhillips' backhand shot forced Price to go long on her volley, giving the crown to the Bruins on McPhillips' fourth match point.
