Six UCLA Baseball Players Earn Pac-12 All-Academic Honors
By: UCLA Athletics

Six UCLA Baseball players have been named to the 2014 Pac-12 All-Academic team, as announced by the conference today. Senior Brian Carroll and junior Max Schuh both earned second-team honors while junior Grant Watson, sophomores Christoph Bono and Cody Poteet, and freshman Nick Kern all received honorable mention.

Carroll, an outfielder from San Diego, Calif., appeared in 47 games in 2014, making 42 starts (all in center field). He hit .252 with 22 runs scored, seven doubles, 14 RBI and seven stolen bases while recording an on-base percentage of .357. Carroll was terrific in the field defensively, making just one error all season and posting a .991 fielding percentage. In the classroom, Carroll has graduated with a 3.30 GPA in Political Science.

Schuh, a left-hander from Fresno, Calif., made a Pac-12 leading 37 appearances, all in relief. He posted an 0-1 record with a 1.55 ERA in 29 innings pitched, fanning 34 batters as well. At one point during the season, Schuh did not allow an earned run in 22 consecutive appearances from March 7 to April 29. Off the field, Schuh has earned a 3.44 GPA as a Political Science major. Both Schuh and Carroll earned Pac-12 All-Academic honors for the second year in a row after receiving honorable mention in 2013.

Bono started all 56 games for the Bruins, batting .228 with 19 runs, 11 doubles, one triple and 21 RBI. He also logged 15 multi-hit games and five multi-RBI games and his 11 doubles were the second-most on the team. This is the second year in a row that Bono has received Pac-12 All-Academic honorable mention accolades.

Watson, a left-hander from Bakersfield, Calif., made 17 appearances including 15 starts. Serving as UCLA's Saturday starter all season, Watson went 4-9 with a 3.80 ERA and struck out 71 batters in 97 innings pitched. In addition, he posted 10 quality starts (6 IP, 3 ER or less) on the season and led all pitchers in the Pac-12 with five pickoffs on the year.

Kern appeared in 33 games, all in relief, posting a 1-1 record with a 4.98 ERA and three saves. His 33 appearances are the third-most in the Pac-12 and he compiled 38 strikeouts in 34.1 innings pitched as well.

Poteet went 3-5 in 17 appearances (15 starts), posting a 4.46 ERA as UCLA's Sunday starter. He struck out 49 batters in 78.2 innings pitched and surrendered only 16 walks, the fifth-fewest in the Pac-12. His best performance of the season came when he pitched a complete game two-hit shutout on March 2 vs. Michigan, striking out a career-high 13 batters and walking none.

Watson, Kern and Poteet all earned Pac-12 All-Academic honors for the first times in their careers. To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade point average and be either a starter or significant contributor.
