Giron Ends the Year Ranked No. 1
By: UCLA Athletics
LOS ANGELES - NCAA Champion Marcos Giron ended the year as the No. 1 singles player in the nation on Wednesday, as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) released its year-end singles and doubles rankings. Senior Clay Thompson, who was ranked No. 1 for the entire spring season, ended up just behind Giron, giving UCLA the top 2 players in the nation.

Giron, a junior from Thousand Oaks, Calif., became UCLA's 11th NCAA Singles Champion - and first since Benjamin Kohlloeffel in 2006 - on May 26 when he defeated Pepperdine's Alex Sarkissian, 6-4, 6-1 in the NCAA Singles Final in Athens, Ga. Giron was ranked a career-high No. 2 heading into the NCAA Championships, meaning that Wednesday's No. 1 ranking is the highest of his career.

In addition to Giron and Thompson, other Bruin players to end the year ranked in singles were: Mackenzie McDonald (No. 23), Gage Brymer (No. 69) and Karue Sell (No. 104).

In doubles, Giron and McDonald finish the year at No. 11, just one spot out of earning All-America honors.

In order to be named an All-American for singles, players had to meet one of the following criteria: Top 16 seed in NCAA Singles Draw; reach round of 16 in NCAA Singles Championships; finish in the top 20 of final ITA Singles Rankings. In doubles, All-America honors were given to those who were a top 8 seed in the NCAA Doubles Championships; reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA Doubles Championships or finished in the top 10 of the final ITA Rankings.

Based on the above criteria, UCLA's All-Americans for 2014 are: Marcos Giron (Singles), Clay Thompson (Singles) and Mackenzie McDonald (Singles).
