Three UCLA Men's Soccer Players Return to Earn Their Degrees
By: UCLA Athletics

Three former UCLA soccer players, Nelson Akwari, Alex Yi and Jordan Harvey, all returned to UCLA after their playing days and have earned their degrees from the University this spring.

Akwari will graduate with a degree in Chemistry/Material Science while Yi earned his degree in History. Harvey returned to UCLA to get his degree in Sociology.

Yi played at UCLA for two seasons (2000-01), starting 41 matches as a defender. In 2001, he was a nominee for both the Hermann Trophy and M.A.C. Player of the Year Award while earning All-America honors from the NSCAA. He was a key member of a UCLA defense that shut out nine opponents in 2011 while starting 22 matches for the team. In 2000, Yi earned Pac-10 Freshman of the Year honors and in his career was a two-time All-Pac-10 selection. After his UCLA career, Yi played overseas in Italy and Germany before enjoying a four-year career in MLS with FC Dallas.

Akwari was Yi's teammate, also playing at UCLA for two seasons from 2000-01. Like Yi, Akwari was a key member of that same UCLA defense in 2001 that recorded nine shutouts. He earned second-team NSCAA All-Far West and All-Pac-10 honors in 2001 and served as the team's co-captain that season. In 2000, Akwari was an honorable mention All-Pac-10 selection after starting all 19 of UCLA's matches and following his UCLA career he played five years in MLS with three clubs.

Harvey was a four-year letterwinner at UCLA from 2002-05. He played in 69 matches in his collegiate career as a defender, making 54 starts. He scored seven goals and logged nine assists in his career, winning the 2002 NCAA title with the Bruins. Harvey was a three-time All-Pac-10 honoree, earning honorable mention in 2002 and 2004 before receiving second-team acclaim in 2005. In 2005, he was selected to the Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Season and helped UCLA earn 14 shutouts on the season, the second-most in school history. Following his UCLA career, Harvey went professional and is currently in his ninth season in MLS, playing with the Vancouver Whitecaps.
