Southport, England. -- UCLA graduate Mo Martin won the 2014 Ricoh British Open Sunday at Royal Birkdale to capture her first LPGA victory and her first major championship.

Martin knocked a 3-wood 235 yards, watched it hit the pin and roll six feet away on the par 5 18th hole. She made the putt for eagle, and waited an hour as her precarious one-shot lead held up. One by one, Inbee Park, Suzann Petterson and Shashan Feng fell away, leaving Martin the winner at 287 (-1).

"An absolutely perfect 3-wood," she said. "When it was in the air, I said, 'Sit.' And then I said, 'Stop.' And then when it was going toward the hole, I said, 'OK, I don't have anything more to say to that ball.' I actually heard it hit the pin. It's definitely one to remember."

The major championship victory makes Martin the first former female UCLA golfer to win one. She joins Corey Pavin (1995 U.S. Open) as the only UCLA alumni to win a major championship.

Martin had a three-shot lead going into the weekend, sticking to her strategy of keeping the ball in the fairway. But she posted a 77 in the third round, and that nearly derailed her chances. After two bogeys in five holes to start the final round, she was solid the rest of the way. The eagle at the 72nd hole gave her an even par 72.

"Absolutely a dream come true," Martin said. "Safe to say it's the best week of my life."
