SPARKS, Nev. – The UCLA cross country team opened the 2014 season under the lights at the Nevada Twilight Classic held at the Shadow Mountain Park late Friday night.
The men raced past four teams to earn the victory with 22 points, outdistancing UC Riverside’s 35 while the women placed four in the six team competition with 87 points.
The men took the top three spots and placed all seven runners in the top-15 with the scorers all finishing in the top 10. Junior Nick Hartle paced the Bruins on the 5k course with a time of 15:39 to win the meet. Sophomore Austin O’Neil followed in second at 15:46 while junior Sergey Sushchickh closely followed in third at 15:47.
Sophomore Jonah Diaz finished seventh with a time of 16:17 while redshirt freshman Max Davis rounded out the UCLA scorers with a time of 16:25 to place ninth overall. Sophomore Sean Davis crossed the line at 16:38 to finish 11th and Nolan Dickson placed 13th at 16:44.
On the women’s side redshirt freshman Sabrina Seay led the Bruins on the 4k course with a time of 15:14 to place seventh overall. Freshman Roni Yamane finished 13th at 15:27 while sophomore Rachel Brajkovich finished 17th at 15:37.
Junior Kelly Brooks placed 29th at 16:10 while junior Jen Owen followed in 34th at 16:30. Sadia-Alamitu Ibrahim rounded out the Bruins in 45th place in a time of 19:59.
UCLA will return to training camp in the Mammoth mountains before heading to the BYU Autumn Classic. The meet is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 13 in Provo, Utah.
