Hot Bruins Climb the Leader Board in Hawaii

The UCLA men’s golf team heated up and climbed the leader board Friday in the second round of the Amer Ari Invitational at the Waikoloa Kings Course.

The 15th-ranked Bruins fired a team score of 271 (-17) and vaulted seven spots up the leader board into a tie for sixth place entering Saturday’s final round. UCLA (554, -22) trails first-place Oklahoma State (548, -28) by six shots. Oregon was second at 550 (-26), followed by third-place Washington at 552 (-24). Auburn and USC were tied for fourth place at 553 (-23).

UCLA’s 17-under par team score was the second best score of the tournament. Georgia Tech moved 11 spots up the leader board with a second round score of 270 (-18). Oklahoma State posted a score of 271 in Monday’s first round.

Individually for the Bruins, sophomore Lorens Chan fired a 65 (-7) on Friday to move into a tie for second place, one shot off the lead. The Honolulu native made nine birdies against two bogeys on Friday. Junior Jay Hwang posted a 67 (-5) in the second round, and was tied for 25th at 139 (-5). Sophomore Jonathan Garrick was tied for 42nd at 141 (-3) following his round of 68 (-4). Matt Pinizzotto was tied for 83rd at 146 (+2) following a round of 71 (-1) and Jake Knapp was tied for 91st at 147 (+5) after carding a 77 (+5).

Stanford’s Cameron Wilson led the field at 132 (-12) after firing a round of 65 (-7) on Friday.
