Bruins Sixth after Opening Day at the Gifford Collegiate

The 13th-ranked UCLA men’s golf team was in sixth place Monday after the opening day of the Gifford Collegiate Championship at the North Course of the Pelican Hill Resort in Newport Beach, CA.

The Bruins posted a 36-hole team score of 564 (+4) and were 13 shots off the lead set by top-ranked Alabama, which was first at 551 (-9). Northwestern was the only other team under par on the day, placing second at six-under 554. Tied for third were SMU and USC at 560 (E), followed by Washington in fifth place at 561 (+1).

In individual team scoring for the Bruins, sophomore Jonathan Garrick was tied for seventh at 71-66-137 (-3). Sophomore Lorens Chan was tied for 11th at 139 (-1) after posting rounds of 68-71. Junior Matt Pinizzotto was tied for 25th at three-over par 143 after carding scores of 74-69, and senior Anton Arboleda was tied for 32nd at 145 (+5) after rounds of 72-73. Junior Preston Valder posted rounds of 74-75—149 (+9) and was tied for 46th.

Six UCLA players competed as individuals, led by junior Jake Knapp, who was tied for fourth place at 135 (-5) after firing rounds of 65-70. Tied for 21st was junior Jay Hwang at 142 (+2) after carding scores of 70-72—142 (+2). Freshman Alex Angard was tied for 37th at seven-over par 137 after signing for scores of 74-73, and junior Manav Shah was tied for 35th at 146 (+6) after recording scores of 71-75. Sophomores Reilly McMahon and Aaron Kunitomo were tied for 54th and 56th, respectively.

SMU’s Harry Higgs was the 36-hole leader at eight-under par 132 following consecutive scores of 66.
