The UCLA men's golf program collected another academic award this week when the Golf Coaches Association of America recognized it as one of 69 Division I programs with a cumulative grade point average above 3.0.

"We're very proud of this team's academic award from the GCAA," said Head Coach Derek Freeman. "UCLA is a challenging educational environment, and this recognition is a credit to our players' academic prowess as well as their time-management skills."

The Bruins, who were the athletic department's 2010-11 best academic team, posted a collective 3.14 grade point average for the 2011-12 academic year. Seven players on the roster boasted a B average or better, led by Second-Team GCAA All-Americans Pedro Figueiredo (3.63) and Patrick Cantlay (3.34). Senior Bobby Lange, a First-Team All-Pac-12 academic selection, led the Bruins with a gpa of 3.78. The others were junior Anton Arboleda (3.12), sophomore Jay Hwang (3.09), sophomore Matt Pinizzotto (3.12) and senior Pontus Widegren (3.10).

In 2010-11 the men's golf team won UCLA's Donald R. Shepard Award for Highest Team GPA, which was 3.311. That figure represented an improvement of 0.51 from the previous year and earned the team UCLA's Most Improved Team GPA Award.

In other news, three UCLA players made the 36-hole cut Wednesday at the 110th Western Amateur Championship at Exmoor Country Club in Highland Park, Il.

Incoming freshman Lorens Chan, senior Pedro Figueiredo and sophomore Manav Shah each earned a tee time for Thursday's 36-hole stroke play competition. Chan posted rounds of 70-68--138 (-6) and was tied for second place, Figueiredo was tied for ninth at 140 (-4) after carding rounds of 73-67 and Shah tied for 24th at 142 (-2) following his rounds of 73-69.

The cut of 144 (E) claimed four UCLA players: junior Anton Arboleda (73-73--146), incoming freshman Jonathan Garrick (76-70--146), sophomore Matt Pinizzotto (76-70--146) and incoming freshman Jake Knapp (75-72--147).

The remaining format features 36-holes of stroke play on Thursday with a cut to the top 16 for match play on Friday and Saturday.
