No. 12 UCLA Rowing Concludes Weekend at San Diego Crew Classic

SAN DIEGO - The No. 12-ranked UCLA women’s rowing program concluded its second day at the San Diego Crew Classic on Mission Bay, competing in five Grand Final races in addition to the final second varsity four race on Sunday.

UCLA’s novice eight and varsity four crews finished third in their respective Grand Finals. The Bruins’ open eight crew and second varsity four boat posted fourth-place finishes. The varsity eight finished sixth in its heat, while the second varsity eight logged a fifth-place finish.

The Bruins advanced each of five crews to Grand Final races on Saturday after having finished second in their opening heats Saturday.

UCLA’s varsity eight crossed the finish line sixth on Sunday, as the heat’s final four boats were within 4.77 seconds of each other. The second varsity eight race witnessed the heat’s first five crews cross the finish line within 2.79 seconds. UCLA finished fifth, just 0.09 seconds behind fourth-place Washington State and 1.86 seconds behind third-place USC.

The Bruins’ varsity four crew finished third, behind top finishers USC and California. UCLA crossed the finish line ahead of Washington, San Diego and Iowa in the Grand Final.

UCLA’s novice eight registered a third-place finish in the Bruins’ final race of the day. The Bruins posted a time of 7:10.29, just 0.18 seconds behind second-place finisher California (7:10.11). Washington won the novice eight race with a final time of 7:04.59.

The Bruins’ open eight crew finished fourth, crossing the finish line behind Stanford, Texas and Union BC. UCLA’s second varsity four, which did not race on Saturday, recorded a fourth-place finish on Sunday morning, finishing behind USC, Gonzaga and Old Dominion, respectively.

UCLA will return to action at the Clemson Invitational on Saturday, April 19 and Sunday, April 20. The Clemson Invitational races will take place on Lake Hartwell in Clemson, S.C.
