UCLA Hits the Road for a Key Pac-12 South Matchup

LOS ANGELES — UCLA (6-2, 3-2 ranked #16 in the Associated Press and 18th in the USA Today Coaches Poll/ 19th in BCS) will play at Arizona (6-2, 3-2) on Saturday, Nov. 9.  The game will kickoff at 7:00 p.m. PT/8:00 MT and be televised by ESPN with Joe Tessitore (play by play), Matt Millen (color) and Maria Taylor (field reporter) calling the action. The Bruin IMG Radio Network (Chris Roberts, Matt Stevens and Wayne Cook) will air the contest on am 570 Fox Sports Radio. The contest will also be broadcast on SIRIUS (Ch. 93), XM (Ch.195).  All UCLA football games can also be heard live on smart phones and tablets via the free TuneIn App. Sports USA will also air a national radio broadcast of the contest with John Ahlers, Gary Barnett and Richard Gray mikeside.

BRUINS VS. THE ‘CATS — The Bruins lead the series, 20-15-2. UCLA captured last year’s meeting (game 9) by a score of 66-10 in a contest during which Johnathan Franklin became the school’s all-time leading rusher and Brett Hundley passed for three scores. The Bruins totaled 611 yards of offense in the contest.

Arizona handed the Bruins a 48-12 setback in the last trip to Tucson in 2011. The Wildcats jumped out to a 42-7 halftime lead and never looked back. Quarterback Nick Foles threw for three scores while UCLA managed just 37 yards rushing in the contest.

The Bruins will be looking to win for the first time in Tucson since a 24-21 verdict in 2003. UCLA rallied from a 21-10 halftime deficit in that battle. The winning points came on a fourth quarter 55-yard interception return of a Wildcat shovel pass by defensive lineman Rodney Leisle.

BRUINS IN BRIEF
**Anthony Barr has 34.5 tackles for loss in his two seasons as a defensive player … He has had at least 0.5 tackles for loss in all but one of his 22 games as a LB… Barr is 2nd in the nation in forced fumbles at 0.50/g; Barr is ranked 7th in TFLs 1.6/g; Barr is 10th in the nation in fumbles recovered (0.38);

**UCLA went 5-0 against the Pac-12 South last season and is off to a 2-0 start this season with Arizona, ASU and USC remaining on the schedule

**The win over Colorado gave UCLA its first 4-0 home start since the 2006 season

**QB Brett Hundley had his 10th career 300-yard total offense game against Colorado (ran for 72 and passed for 273)…Hundley’s dad (also named Brett) attended the University of Arizona and was on the football team as a running back in the mid-1980’s

**The Bruins are 13-0 under head coach Jim Mora when ahead at the half

**Team Ranking Highlights - The Bruins are ranked 10th nationally in 3rd down conversions (0.52);11th in punt return def. (3.0)

**Barr has been named a semifinalist for the Bednarik Award as the Nation’s Top Defender ... He is also a quarterfinalist for the Lott Impact Trophy

**UCLA established a new school record for most true freshmen playing in a season (18) in the Oregon contest ... It played 15 in the 2013 opener; 15 redshirt freshmen have also seen action this season. UCLA played 26 total freshmen in ‘12 -- 12 true / 14 redshirt freshmen.

**The Bruins are 9-3 vs. the teams placed in the P12 South (Utah 2-1, USC 1-1, Colorado 3-0, ASU 2-0, Arizona 1-1)

**UCLA matched its school record total of seven true freshmen position starters vs. Colorado (OG Alex Redmond, OG Scott Quessenberry, OT Caleb Benenoch, Y Thomas Duarte, LB Myles Jack, LB Isaako Savaiinaea, DL Eddie Vanderdoes) ... At Oregon DL Kenny Clark joined Redmond, Quessenberry, Benenoch, Duarte, Jack, Vanderdoes)...Punter/KO Sean Covington would make it eight true freshmen starting the past two games.

**Safety Anthony Jefferson has been quite active the last three games with 33 tackles - LB Jordan Zumwalt (28), S Randall Goforth (27) and DL Eddie Vanderdoes (15) - have also been in the middle of the action.

 **The starting lineup the last two weeks also included a redshirt freshman (RB Paul Perkins) and 7 sophomores (WR Jordan Payton, WR Devin Fuller, QB Brett Hundley, C Jake Brendel, CB Fabian Moreau, CB Ishmael Adams, S Randall Goforth).

**QB Brett Hundley has been UCLA’s leading rusher over the last four games with 46 carries for 189 yards.

**UCLA is now bowl eligible. It has played in bowl games in nine of the last 11 seasons (not 2010, 2008).

**This is the first time UCLA has opened in and remained ranked by AP through the first 10 listings of a season since 2001

**Receiver Thomas Duarte hauled in his second scoring pass of the season at Oregon joining Devin Fuller, 2012/Ryan Moya 2005/ DeShaun Foster 1998/ Brian Poli-Dixon 1997/ Brad Melsby 1995 behind true freshman school record holder Raymond Burks who had a total of three scoring catches in 1973

**Myles Jack’s blocked punt at Oregon was the 11th kick blocked by the Bruins since Jim Mora became head coach

**UCLA is 12-3 under Coach Mora when scoring first, 8-0 when doing so at home

**UCLA is 13-0 under Coach Mora when ahead at the half

**PK Ka’imi Fairbairn has connected on 16 straight FG attempts from 35 yards and in and 8 of his last 9 from any distance.

**WR Shaquelle Evans has caught at least one pass in last 23g and a scoring pass in five of this season’s first eight games

**Frosh DE Eddie Vanderdoes’ 11 tackles at Stanford were the most by a D-lineman since 1992 (Bruce Walker-12 v. ASU)

**In recent years, UCLA has opened a season with at least five straight wins in ‘05 (8-0), ‘01 (6-0), ‘98 (10-0)

**Hundley is two shy of school record holder Cade McNown’s total of 12 300-yard total offense games after his 375 yard-effort against Colorado...He racked up a personal best 428 yards of total offense earlier this season vs. Cal.

**UCLA is wearing a No. 36 patch on its uniform to honor the memory of Nick Pasquale, a redshirt freshman receiver from San Clemente, CA, who passed away in a tragic accident on Sept. 8.      

**UCLA has won 19 of its last 24 games when winning the turnover battle (79%) and owns a 16-33 record in its last 49 games (33%) when losing or tying the turnover ratio

**UCLA is 6-4 in true road games (2-1 in ‘13) under Coach Mora...Last year, the Bruins won as many as four road games in a season for the first time since 2002 (4-2 on road in 2012)

**UCLA has won 13 of its last 14 games when it limits the opponent to less than 100 rushing yards (1-0 in ‘13, 3-0 in ‘12)

MORE BRUIN NOTES — **The Cal game was 20th straight game UCLA has won when holding the opponent under 20 points

**UCLA’s six interceptions at Utah were the most since it recorded a like total in a 1987 win over Stanford (record is 10)

 **Junior LB Eric Kendricks’ 150 tackles in 2012 were the most by a Bruin since 1978 (Jerry Robinson 161 in 1978)

 **In records dating back to 1960, no UCLA player had ever previously run for a score, thrown for a touchdown and caught a scoring pass in a single game as Brett Hundley did at Utah

**Soph safety Randall Goforth’s 19 tackles at Stanford were the most since safety Dennis Keyes recorded 19 vs. USC in 2007; the last player with more was LB Reggie Carter who totaled 20 vs. BYU in 2008

** The win at #23/15 Nebraska earlier this season was first on road against ranked opponent since win at No. 7 Texas in 2010

**UCLA’s total of 64 yards passing was its lowest output since completing six passes for 55 yards in a 2010 game at Washington; UCLA had defeated No. 7-ranked Texas earlier that season while throwing for 27 yards

**Hundley topped the 400-yard passing mark for the first time at home vs. Cal. He is the first UCLA quarterback to ever throw for at least 300 yards in three straight games (305 Nebraska/320 Houston/372 Oregon St. in 2012).

**UCLA put up a school-record total of 692 yards of total offense against New Mexico State after racking up 504 yards of offense at Nebraska and recording 647 yards of offense vs. Nevada...It had not gained at least 500 yards of total offense in any three-game stretch during a season, prior to the 2012 season (complete records date back to 1965 season) ...Years in which UCLA has had at least three games, with at least 500-yards of total offense -- 2013 3 (Nevada=647/Nebraska=504/New Mex. ** UCLA erased an 18-point deficit to beat Nebraska in Lincoln. The 18-point deficit ties for the seventh largest deficit overcome in Bruin history. The most is a 22-point deficit against Northwestern in the 2005 Sun Bowl.

**Only one Bruin head coach won as many games in his first season at UCLA as Jim Mora (9) – Terry Donahue, 1976

**Hundley’s 410 passing yards vs. Cal was the third-highest total in school history and most since Drew Olson threw for 510 vs. Arizona State in 2005

**Hundley’s 428 yards of  total offense vs. Cal was the fourth-highest total in school history and most since Drew Olson totaled 501 yards in 2005 vs. Arizona State 

BRUIN FRESHMEN OVER THE YEARS — The Bruins established a new school mark when guard Scott Quessenberry took the field at Oregon as the 18th true freshman to see action this season. Fifteen true freshmen saw action in the 2013 opener -- LB Cameron Judge, LB Isaako Savaiinaea, LB Jayon Brown, LB Deon Hollins, LB Myles Jack, DL Kenny Clark, DL Kylie Fitts, DL Eddie Vanderdoes, S Tahaan Goodman, P/KO Sean Covington, WR Jalen Ortiz, WR Darren Andrews, Y receiver Thomas Duarte, OG Alex Redmond, OL Caleb Benenoch.  A 16th true frosh, CB Priest Willis, saw action at Nebraska on special teams. Freshman cornerback Charles Dawson saw action vs. New Mexico State to become freshman No. 17 and tie the former school record set in 1977.

UCLA played 12 true freshmen in 2012.  In recent years, nine played in 2005, eight in 2006, two in 2007 and 11 in 2008. UCLA played 10 freshmen in 2009 and again in 2010. One first-year player saw action in 2011.

FIRST ACTION — In addition to the 18 true freshmen who have seen action in 2013, the following 19 players have taken the field for the first time this season for the Bruins: DB Justin Combs (Fr.R),  Y Brendan Cross (Grad.), RB Ryan Davis (Fr.R), Y Daniel Eaton (Fr.R), QB Mike Fafaul(Fr.R), WR Sam Handler (Fr.R), WR Ahmaad Harris (Fr.R), WR Zach Hernandez (Fr.R), OL Carl Hulick (Fr.R), FB Nate Iese (Fr.R), PK Mitch Johnson (Fr.R), LB Taylor Lagace (Fr.R), LS Christopher Longo (So.R), OL Conor McDermott (Fr.R), QB Jerry Neuheisel (Fr.R), WR Nick Pasquale (Fr.R), RB Paul Perkins (Fr.R), DL Sam Tai (So.R), DB Erick Zumwalt (So.R).          

AT THE STARTING LINE — Redshirt junior offensive guard Xavier Su’a-Filo tops the team with 35 career starts. The defensive player with the most starts is senior end Cassius Marsh (33). The players with the longest starting streak are LB Anthony Barr, PK Ka’imi Fairbairn, C Jake Brendel, OL Xavier Su’a-Filo, and QB Brett Hundley with 22.      

UCLA AND THE BCS — UCLA was ranked in the initial BCS rankings for the first time since it opened at No. 9 in the 2005 listing. The Bruins opened at No. 3 in the 2001 rankings and in the top spot in the 1998 poll.

UCLA was ranked No. 17 in the 2012 final BCS Standings. The last time UCLA was ranked in the BCS, prior to the 2012 season, was on Dec. 3, 2006, at No. 25. The Bruins have moved into the BCS rankings in the 1998, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2012 and 2013 seasons. The Bruins have been listed as high as No. 1 in the rankings and were No.1 in the very first BCS ranking released on Oct. 26, 1998.

BRUINS IN THE POLLS — UCLA moved as high as 9th in the Associated Press rankings this season. The Bruins last were ranked as high during the first week of November 2005 (7th). UCLA moved as high as 15th in the AP poll and 16th in the USA Today Coaches Poll last season. It was last in the top five of the Associated Press poll in the 2001 season when it spent two weeks at No. 4 after winning its first six games.

COMING UP — UCLA returns to the Rose Bowl for a Friday night matchup against Washington at 6 p.m.
