LOS ANGELES - Three Bruins were named to the Sporting News Freshman All-America football team announced on Friday. In addition, UCLA linebacker Anthony Barr earned first-team All-America honors from the publication.

Freshmen Alex Redmond (OL), Eddie Vanderdoes (DL) joined Myles Jack (LB) on the 2013 Sporting News All-America squad. Jack, who joined the starting lineup in game two at Nebraska, ranks tied for fourth on the team in tackles with 70. The total of 70 stops is the most by a UCLA freshman since 1977. He has also rushed for seven touchdowns this season, a school freshman record four scores coming in the win over Washington.

Redmond has started each game this season on the offensive line at right guard. Vanderdoes earned six starting assignments and has recorded 38 tackles on the year, including 4.5 tackles for loss. His total of 11 tackles against Stanford was the most by a Bruin defensive lineman since 1992. Vanderdoes also scored a rushing touchdown against USC.

Barr, the Bruins' first winner of the Lott IMPACT Trophy and a finalist for the Butkus, Lombardi and Bednarik awards, was named earlier this week to All-America teams from USA Today, Walter Camp, Athlon Sports and NFL.com.

Offensive lineman Xavier Su’a-Filo was selected to the first-team All-America squad by NFL.com and is a second-team pick by USA Today and Athlon. Jack earned first-team Athlon All-America honors as an all-purpose player. The freshman was also recognized as the publication’s pick for Newcomer of the Year in the conference.

The Bruins will take on Virginia Tech in the Hyundai Sun Bowl on Dec. 31 in El Paso, Texas. See the UCLA Bowl Central page for further information.
