LOS ANGELES - UCLA (ranked #7 in both the Associated Press and the Coaches polls) opens the 2014 football season on Saturday, Aug. 30 at Noon ET/ 9 a.m. PT in Scott Stadium (61,500-grass) at the University of Virginia. The game will be televised by ESPN with Bob Wischusen, Matt Millen and Quint Kessenich on the scene. The Bruin IMG Radio Network (Chris Roberts, Matt Stevens and Wayne Cook) will radio broadcast the contest on 570am Fox Sports Radio LA. The game will also be aired on SIRIUS (Ch. 84), XM (Ch. 84).
UCLA will open in the month of August for the third straight season and will begin on the road for the fourth time in five seasons (2010 L at Kansas State, 2011 L at Houston, 2012 W at Rice, 2013 W at home over Nevada). The Bruins captured last season’s opener over Nevada by a 58-20 score in the Rose Bowl. UCLA was ranked 21st in last season’s pre-season AP poll. The No. 7 AP preseason ranking is the highest for the program since it was also ranked No. 7 prior to the 1998 campaign. UCLA climbed as high as No. 7 in the 2005 regular season poll. Third-year head coach Jim Mora, who led the Bruins to victory in the Sun Bowl over Virginia Tech to match the school record for wins in a season (10-3) welcomes back 18 (8 defensive, 8 offensive, 2 specialists) returning starters. The coaching staff was kept virtually intact, with Mike Tuiasosopo (OLB/Special Teams) joining the group for Spring practice. Kennedy Polamalu (Running Backs) was added to the staff in time to coach for the Sun Bowl. Jeff Ulbrich moved up to Defensive Coordinator and will also handle the inside linebackers.
This will be the first meeting between the Bruins and the Cavaliers on the gridiron. Both teams ended the 2013 season playing against Virginia Tech. UCLA bested the Hokies 42-12 in the Sun Bowl, while UVa dropped a 16-6 decision. UVa produced a 2-10 mark last year. One of the wins came in the 2013 season-opener over BYU in Charlottesville. Head Coach Mike London is entering his fifth season. Safety Anthony Harris ranked No. 1 in the nation in 2013 with eight interceptions. Running back Kevin Parks powered his way to over 1,000 yards rushing a year ago.
UCLA is 17-13 all-time vs. teams in the current Atlantic Coast Conference -- Virginia Tech (1-0), Duke 1-0), Florida State (0-1), Miami (2-1), NC State (2-0), Pitt (9-5), Syracuse (2-6).
UCLA’s home opener will take place on Saturday, Sept. 6 at 7pm in the Rose Bowl against Memphis. Season tickets for 2014 are on sale at uclabruins.com/tickets. The Bruins have six home games this season at the Rose Bowl – Sept. 6 vs. Memphis, Oct. 4 vs. Utah, Oct. 11 vs. Oregon, Nov. 1 vs. Arizona, Nov. 22 vs. USC and Nov. 28 vs. Stanford.
