Just like last year, the UCLA Bruins are 3-0 with high hopes as they prepare to hit the Pacific Northwest for their Pacific-10 Conference opener.

Coach Bob Toledo says the similarities end there.

"We're 3-0, everybody starts to say, `It's last year.' It's not last year," Toledo said Monday. "It's a different team, it's a different year."

UCLA rose to No. 6 in the AP media poll after beating Alabama, Fresno State and then Michigan to start the 2000 season, prompting backup quarterback Ryan McCann to say:

"I think we proved we were the No. 1 team in the nation. I don't know who else we can beat, or what else we can do."

What they did next was lose to Oregon 29-10 - the first of six losses in their final nine games.

Now the Bruins are No. 12 after beating Alabama, Kansas and Ohio State as they get set to play No. 19 Oregon State (1-1).

"Experience teaches you an awful lot," he said. "When you win three games and start popping off, that you're the best team in the country, that's a mistake."
