Robert Thomas Named Butkus Award Finalist

The Downtown Athletic Club of Orlando, Inc. announced three Butkus Award® finalists today at a national teleconference from Spectators Sports Grill in Orlando

Orlando-The Downtown Athletic Club of Orlando announced three finalists for the 2001 Butkus Award® presented annually to the best linebacker in college football. The finalists were voted upon by the independent Butkus Award® Selection Committee, comprised of the nation's foremost media members. The 2001 Butkus Award® winner will be chosen by a confidential ballot of the Butkus Award® Selection Committee and announced by the award's namesake Dick Butkus at the Butkus Award® Presentation Ceremony on December 7, 2001 at the Downtown Orlando Marriott-Expo Center. In alphabetical order the three finalists are:

Rocky Calmus Oklahoma, Sr. #20 (106 total tackles, 3 sacks, 12 TFL, 1 INT)

E.J. Henderson Maryland, Jr. #42 (130 total tackles, 5 sacks, 25 TFL and 1 INT)

Robert Thomas UCLA, Sr. # 8 (99 total tackles, 5.5 sacks, 22 TFL, 1 forced fumble)

The three finalists, their coaches, families and the Butkus Silver Anniversary Award winner are scheduled to attend the event. Sunshine Network's Paul Kennedy will be the master of ceremonies. This is the first time in the club's 17-year history that the Butkus Award® will be presented during a banquet-luncheon format. We look forward to providing a new avenue so more people can experience the excitement of the Butkus Award®.
