UCLA head football coach Karl Dorrell announced today that Robert Lopez has been hired as director of football operations. Lopez will oversee the administrative side of the UCLA football program.
Lopez comes to UCLA from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, where he has served as executive director of enrollment services and director of admissions since April of 2001. At UW-Eau Claire he played a lead role in the design, development, implementation and management of a comprehensive and integrated enrollment services program. He was in charge of admissions and recruitment services for traditional and non-traditional undergraduate students among other duties.
Prior to entering the college admissions field, Lopez spent 14 years coaching football at the high school, junior college and college levels. He played quarterback at Illinois State University from 1972-76, starting his last two seasons.
Lopez began his career as a high school teacher and later became director of admissions and athletics at Fort Scott (KS) Community College. From 1987-1998, he held several positions at Northern Arizona University, including recruiting coordinator and assistant coach, and program coordinator in the Counseling and Testing Center and in the Office of Admissions. He was assistant director of admissions at Northern Arizona from 1994-98 and was marketing manager for Southwest Student Services Corp., Mesa, AZ, for one year. In 1999, he moved to Peru (NE) State College as director of enrollment management.
Dorrell and Lopez worked together in 1990-91 at Northern Arizona University where Dorrell was the football team's offensive coordinator and Lopez served as recruiting coordinator.
Lopez and his wife Nancy have two sons, Tyler and Daniel. He holds a bachelor's degree in science, health and physical education and a master's degree in educational administration from Illinois State University, Normal, IL.
