Release:  02/04/2004

Feb. 4, 2004

Defensive end Brigham Harwell, offensive lineman Shannon Tevaga and defensive back Rodney Van head the list of 20 high school seniors who have signed football letters-of-intent to attend UCLA. In addition, UCLA signed six junior college prospects in December.

Harwell, who was selected to the Parade All-America team and made virtually every All-America listing, recorded 68.5 quarterback sacks during his career at Los Altos High. Tevaga, who starred on both sides of the ball at La Mirada High, will play offense in college. Van, who can play cornerback or safety, made 84 tackles as a senior at Long Beach Poly High.

"We had specific areas of need and we feel we have addressed those needs between today's signings and the six junior college players who have joined our program," said UCLA head coach Karl Dorrell. "In particular, we needed to sign some impact players on the defensive line, having lost six seniors, and also strengthen our offensive line. Including our junior college signees, we have added five defensive linemen and eight offensive linemen.

"We also added speed and depth at receiver and in the secondary and added depth at quarterback and running back. I would expect several of our new players to contribute very quickly. Our staff is excited about this class and can't wait to get these young men on our practice field."

Seven of the new Bruins were named PrepStar All-Americans, including offensive lineman Brian Abraham, wide receiver Marcus Everett, wide receiver Ryan Graves, Harwell, defensive lineman Ken Lombard, punter Aaron Perez and Van.

Harwell, Tevega and Van were named to SuperPrep's All-America team. Fifteen of the signees were named to SuperPrep's All-Region teams, including Abraham, athlete Brandon Breazell, Everett, Graves, Harwell, linebacker Fred Holmes, offensive lineman Chris Joseph, Lombard, running back Chris Markey, offensive lineman Aaron Meyer, Perez, offensive lineman Nathaniel Skaggs, Tevaga, Van and defensive back Byron Velega.

Harwell and Markey were named Tom Lemming All-Americans. Six more new Bruins - Abraham, Graves, Lombard, Skaggs, Tevaga and Van - were named Lemming All-Region choices.

Eight of the Bruin signees -- Abraham, Breazell, Everett, Graves, Harwell, Perez, Tevaga, Van -were members of the Tacoma News Tribune Western 100.
