UCLA senior defensive end Dave Ball has been named first-team All-American by the Football Writers Association of America, it was announced today.

Ball, the national leader in quarterback sacks, has been named one of five finalists for the Bronko Nagurski Award, presented annually to the nation's top defensive player. He is also one of four finalists for the Rotary Lombardi Award, presented to the nation's top lineman, and one of six finalists for the Ted Hendricks Defensive End of the Year Award.

As a member of the FWAA All-America team, he will participate in the FWAA All-America celebration on Dec. 12 in Orlando, FL. He is also scheduled to be in Charlotte, NC on Dec. 8 for the Nagurski Award banquet and in Houston, TX on Dec. 10 for the Rotary Lombardi Award dinner.

On the year, Ball leads the defensive line with 54 tackles (fifth on the team), including 16.5 sacks and 20.5 tackles for loss, both team highs. He also leads the team with five forced fumbles.

Through games of November 22, Ball is leading the nation in quarterback sacks. He is also tied for sixth nationally in forced fumbles per game (0.42 - five total) and eighth in tackles for loss per game (1.71 - 20.5 total).

Ball leads the Pacific-10 Conference with his 16.5 sacks and 20.5 TFL.

His 16.5 sacks are a new UCLA record, breaking the old mark of 13.0, set by Carnell Lake in 1987.

Ball has recorded a sack in 18 of his last 23 games. He has already set the UCLA career sack record of 30.5, breaking Eric Smith's mark of 26.5. His 43.5 career tackles for loss also rank No. 2 on that list, just 2.0 behind leader Carnell Lake (45.5).
