SEASON OPENER -- UCLA opens the 2005 season on Sept. 3 at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego against the Aztecs of San Diego State. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m PDT. The contest will be televised nationally by ESPN2. Pam Ward and David Norrie (former Bruin quarterback, '82-85) will call the action. Alex Flanagan will be on the sidelines. XTRA Sports 570 and the Bruin Radio Network broadcasts all of the Bruin games with Chris Roberts and Matt Stevens in the booth. Wayne Cook will work the sidelines. This begins UCLA's 87th season of football. The Bruins are 55- 26-5 overall in openers. Oklahoma State bested the Bruins, 31-20, in the Rose Bowl in last season's opener.
THEN AND NOW -- The Bruins finished the 2004 season with a 6-6 mark after dropping a 24-21 decision to Wyoming in the Pioneer Pure Vision Las Vegas Bowl. It was the seventh time in the last eight seasons that the Bruins concluded the regular season qualified to play in a bowl. The Bruins went 4-4 in the Pac-10 to tie for fifth place.
UCLA returns 15 positional starters from 2004 -- seven on offense, eight on defense, plus its placekicker. All but one of the offensive positions (tackle) returns a player who started at least one game last season. Free safety and a cornerback spot are the only defensive positions not to return a player who made at least one start a year ago.
