Nov. 30, 2006

UCLA place kicker Justin Medlock has been selected first-team All-America by the American Football Coaches Association, it was announced today. He is the third Bruin kicker in the last 14 years to earn first-team All-America status, joining Chris Sailer (1997) and Bjorn Merten in 1993.

Thus far in 2006, Medlock has made 24 of 28 field goals (he had a string of 14 straight halted at Notre Dame) -- 85.7% -- and all 25 PATs for a team-high 97 points. He ranks first nationally in field goals (2.18 per game) and 10th in the NCAA and first in the Pac-10 in scoring (8.82). His 97 points are a career high and rank No. 11 on UCLA's single-season scoring list and his 24 field goals are the second-most in school history.

Medlock has kicked four field goals in three different games this season.

His 24 field goals rank No. 2 on UCLA's single-season list, trailing only John Lee's 32 in 1984. His streak of 14 straight was the third longest single-season streak in school history behind John Lee's 18 in 1985 (he made 22 straight over two seasons) and Chris Sailer's 15 straight in 1997.

Medlock is second on UCLA's career field goal list with 66. His career percentage (.786) is third among Bruins with at least 21 career field goals. Medlock also ranks second on the career scoring list with 341 points, moving into the No. 2 spot against Oregon State.

Medlock is one of four Pac-10 players on the AFCA squad, joining Arizona State tight end Zach Miller and running back Marshawn Lynch and defensive back Daymeion Hughes of California.
