UCLA Hosts San Jose State In Home Opener Saturday

UCLA (0-1) opens its 30th season of football in the Rose Bowl with a Sept. 10 game against San Jose State (0-1). Kickoff is set for 7:07 p.m PT and the contest will be televised by Fox Sports West with Bill Macdonald and former Bruin wideout J.J. Stokes in the booth and Courtney Jones on the sideline. AM 570 (KLAC) and the Bruin IMG Radio Network (Chris Roberts, Matt Stevens and Wayne Cook) will radio broadcast the contest. The game will also be broadcast nationally on SIRIUS XM (Ch. 93).

UCLA and San Jose State are meeting for the first time on the gridiron. UCLA had a five-game home season-opener win streak snapped by nationally-ranked Stanford a year ago in a 35-0 setback. In 2009, it scored a 33-14 victory over San Diego State in the Rose Bowl. In 2008, it knocked off Tennessee in overtime, 27-24; in 2007, bested BYU 27-17; in 2006,outscored Utah 31-10; in second game of 2005, it topped Rice 63-21.

NOTES:
***After totaling 322 yards in the air at Houston, UCLA is ranked 15th nationally in passing.
***Tight end Joseph Fauria made six catches for 110 yards and a touchdown at UH. It was the most receiving yards for a tight end since Marcedes Lewis grabbed seven balls for 108 yards against Arizona State in 2005.
***Running back Johnathan Franklin ran 16 times for 128 yards, his eighth career 100-yard effort. Franklin is rated 15th in the first NCAA rush statistics.
***Quarterback Richard Brehaut came on for a shaken-up Kevin Prince to complete 17 of 26 passes for 264 yards and a couple of touchdowns at Houston. He also ran for a career-best 87 yards and a score. His 351 yards of total offense rank seventh in the nation and tied for 20th on the all-time school single game list.
***UCLA racked up 554 yards of total offense on the day at Houston, a figure which ranks 10th in the nation.***UCLA's 11.1 yards per passing attempt in the opener at Houston was the highest mark of any Pac-12 team during the first week of action.
*** Senior Taylor Embree caught five balls at Houston for 60 yards and now has 122 career catches which rank 10th on UCLA's all-time school list (Mike Farr No. 9-124). Embree is 13th on the receiving yards list at 1,608 (Jojo Townsell No. 12 - 1,773).
***Redshirt sophomore safety Alex Mascarenas recorded a career-best nine tackles in the opener at Houston. Redshirt junior defensive end Damien Holmes had a career-best 1.5 tackles for loss. Sophomore defensive tackle Cassius Marsh recorded his first career sack.
***UCLA quarterbacks combined to throw for 322 yards against Houston. The Bruins managed one three-hundred yard game in the air last season (321 at Arizona State).
***The 232 yards rushing at Houston marked the fifth time in the last two seasons the Bruins have gone over the 200-yard mark on the ground (last year v. Houston-266, at Texas-264, v. Wash. St.-437, v. Oregon State-210.
***Redshirt freshmen playing for the first time in the opener at Houston included: RB - Jordon James; LB Aramide Olaniyan (special teams); LB Eric Kendricks; DB - Tevin McDonald; LB Phillip Ruhl (special teams); DL Tre Hale (special teams); Kicker Kip Smith (special teams). Redshirt junior Ryan Medina (special teams) also saw his first career action at Houston.
***A school-record 17 true freshmen played for the Bruins in 1977. Thirteen played in 1975, 12 in 1978, 1980 and 2004 and 10 played in 1979. In recent years, nine played in 2005, eight in 2006, two in 2007 and 11 in 2008. UCLA played 10 freshmen in 2009 (eight saw action in the opener against SDSU). The Bruins played 10 freshman in 2010 (four saw action in opener at Kansas State).
*** True freshman tight end Raymond Nelson saw action in the 2011 opener at Houston.
***On defense, two players made their first starts in the 2011 opener at Houston, safeties Dalton Hilliard (junior) and Alex Mascarenas (rs sophomore); on offense three Bruins made first starts - guards Greg Capella (rs sophomore) and (true sophomore) Chris Ward and (rs junior) tight end Joseph Fauria.

UCLA has won 20 of its last 24 (.833) non-conference matchups played in the Rose Bowl (2011: San Jose State, Texas; 2010: W-Houston; 2009: W-Kansas St./ W-San Diego St.; 2008: L-Fresno St. / W-Tennessee; 2007: L-Notre Dame / W-BYU; 2006: W-Rice / W-Utah; 2005: W-Oklahoma / W-Rice; 2004: W-San Diego St. / L-Okla. St.; 2003: W-San Diego St. / W-Illinois; 2002: L-Colorado / W-Colorado St.; 2001: W-Ohio St.; 2000: W-Michigan, W-Fresno St., W-Alabama; 1999: W-Fresno St. / W-Boise State; 1998: W-Texas).
