Jan. 10, 2013

LOS ANGELES - In addition to a pair of previously confirmed non-conference home games against Nevada and New Mexico State, the UCLA football team learned that it will host four more contests at the Rose Bowl in 2013, as the Pac-12 Conference released the league's football schedule for the upcoming season on Thursday.

Head coach Jim Mora's team opens up the season with Nevada at the Rose Bowl on Aug. 31 and then has a bye before heading to Lincoln, Neb. for a Sept. 14 showdown with Nebraska, a team the Bruins beat 36-30 at the Rose Bowl in 2012. UCLA rounds out the non-conference portion of its season with a home game against New Mexico State on Sept. 21.

The Bruins begin Pac-12 play on the road, heading to Utah for a Thursday night showdown in Salt Lake City. It is one of six games involving conference teams to be played on a Thursday in 2013.

UCLA's four remaining home games are against Cal (Oct. 12), Colorado (Nov. 2), Washington (Fri., Nov. 15) and Arizona State (Nov. 23). UCLA and Washington have not met since 2010, and the Huskies have not played at the Rose Bowl since 2009. The game with UW is one of three Friday night dates on which conference teams will be in action during the upcoming season.

The Bruins' final road contests are at Stanford (Oct. 19), at Oregon (Oct. 26), at Arizona (Nov. 9) and at USC (Nov. 30). UCLA, which traditionally faces USC in its final game of the regular season, finished out the year with Stanford in 2012. USC is once again the Bruins' final regular-season opponent in 2013.

Eight of UCLA's 2013 opponents played in bowl games this past season, including six of the last seven teams on this year's slate.

The 2013 Pac-12 Championship Game is scheduled for Sat., Dec. 7 at the home of the division winner with the best overall Pac-12 record and will be televised by either ESPN or ABC. For the second year in a row, fans across the country will be able to watch every football game played at Pac-12 sites. A combination of the ESPN channels, ABC and FOX will broadcast 44 games nationally and the Pac-12 Networks will offer 35 games to a national audience. Exact broadcast schedules will be developed at a later date.

The South Division champion Bruins are coming off of a 9-5 season and will return 13 starters for 2013. Quarterback Brett Hundley, leading receiver Shaq Evans and offensive lineman Xavier Su'a-Filo headline the offensive returners. Hundley established school records for single-season total offense (4,095 yards) and single-season passing yardage (3,740). His 29 touchdown passes rank second on that all-time single season school list. Evans' 60 catches rated eighth on the all-time Bruin single-season chart, while his total of 877 receiving yards was the 11th-best mark in school history. Su'a-Filo, one of four returning starters along the offensive line, was named first-team all-conference and selected to several All-America teams.

On defense, the Bruins welcome back the top four tacklers on the squad, including Pac-12 tackles leader Eric Kendricks. Also back is linebacker Anthony Barr, who recorded 13.5 sacks in his first year on defense and was named to several All-America teams. Kendricks' 151 tackles rank third on the all-time school list for a season and were the most by a Bruin player since Jerry Robinson registered a school-record 161 stops in 1978. Barr's sack total was the second-highest in school annals and his 0.96 per game average ranked eighth in the nation in 2012.
