The Bruins worked to fine tune their execution for the season-opener on Tuesday and put in another day of good work on the new turf and grass surfaces at Spaulding Field. Coach Mora noted that the final on-field prep would happen in the morning, right before the team boards the buses to the airport. There will still be meetings scheduled right thru game day to help sharpen the player's mental focus.
UCLA opens the 2012 football season on the road with a contest in Houston, TX against Rice University on August 30 (6:30 p.m. CT/4:30 p.m. PT on CBS Sports Network). UCLA is 4-0 all time versus Rice. The Bruins earned a 26-16 win in the most recent contest, held in 2006 at the Rose Bowl. Running backs Chris Markey (208 yards) and Kahlil Bell (102 yards) helped push UCLA over the 300-yard mark on the ground in that game. The second of two Ben Olson touchdown passes on the day helped to put the Owls away, an 18-yard toss to Brandon Breazell.
Following the game at Rice, the Bruins will return home to the Rose Bowl for three straight games --- Nebraska (Sept. 8, 4:30 p.m. on FOX), Houston (Sept. 15, 7:30 p.m. on Pac-12 Networks) and Oregon State (Sept. 22, time TBA).
