Sept. 22, 2011

Three-time All-Pac-10 nose guard Terry Tumey (UCLA '88, MBA '93) served as honorary captain for the Bruins at their Sept. 17 game against Texas.

Tumey is probably best remembered for his sack of Miami's Bernie Kosar in the 1985 Fiesta Bowl. In that game, he had just two tackles playing as a redshirt freshman in his first collegiate bowl game. The Bruins had taken a precarious two-point lead late in the fourth quarter, but Kosar and the Hurricanes were driving and owned possession and a timeout with 31 seconds remaining on their 48-yard line. On first down, Kosar looked to pass, but Tumey broke through, sacking the quarterback and forcing a fumble that was recovered by UCLA. Game over, victory secured for the Bruins.

Tumey would finish his career in 1988 with 35 starts, 227 total tackles, 25 sacks and 39 tackles for loss. The Bruins were 36-10-2 during his career, won two Pac-10 titles and four straight bowl games, including the 1986 Rose Bowl.

Following graduation, Tumey entered the business world but returned to campus in 1992 as the Bruins' graduate assistant coach under Terry Donahue. In 1993, he received his MBA from UCLA's Anderson School of Management. In 1995, he was hired as a full-time assistant coach by Donahue and served on staffs that coached in three bowl games and won 20 consecutive games in 1997 and 1998. He left UCLA in 1999 to work as a defensive assistant coach for the Denver Broncos. He went on to work for the San Francisco 49ers in 2001, serving in several administrative capacities until 2009. Since April of 2009, Tumey has been the athletic director of Dominican University in San Rafael, Calif.

UCLABruins.com's Ralph Irvin caught up with Tumey on the field during the UCLA-Texas game.
