Junior goalkeeper Earl Edwards Jr. was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week today after posting two clean sheets for the Bruins at the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic in Bloomington, Ind. over the weekend.
On Friday against Notre Dame, Edwards made five saves to help UCLA earn a scoreless draw against the seventh-ranked Fighting Irish. It was the fifth shutout of his career and the first time that any team had shut out Notre Dame in 24 matches. Then on Sunday against top-ranked Indiana, Edwards was superb, making four saves to lead the Bruins to a 1-0 overtime win over the Hoosiers. Edwards made a critical save in the 15th minute, leaping up and knocking a ball out of play that was sure to be a goal before stopping a penalty kick in the 75th minute to keep the match tied at 0-0. Edwards has started out the season by going 201 straight minutes without giving up a goal.
The Bruins (1-0-1) will play their first home match of the season on Thursday, Sept. 5 at 7 pm against the Cal Poly Mustangs (1-1-0). The match will be played out at Drake Stadium.
