By: UCLA Athletics

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - The 2013-14 Pac-12 Tom Hansen Conference Medal winners were announced on Monday and the UCLA honorees are men's soccer's Joe Sofia and women's swimming's Anna Senko.

A Conference Medal is awarded annually to each member institution's outstanding senior male and female student-athlete based on the exhibition of the greatest combination of performance and achievement in scholarship, athletics and leadership.

On Tuesday, July 1 at 7 p.m., Pac-12 Networks will air Pride of the Pac, a one-hour special honoring all 24 Tom Hansen Conference Medal winners.

Sofia and Senko were each named UCLA Scholar-Athlete of the Year and both earned the Athletic Director's Academic Excellence Award, recognition for having made the Director's Honor Roll every quarter at UCLA.

Sofia, a defender from Dove Canyon, Calif., played in 19 of UCLA’s 20 matches during the 2013 season while serving as the anchor of the back line. He captained the Bruins to the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2003, all while helping the team earn seven shutouts on the season. Additionally, Sofia led all of UCLA’s position players in minutes with 1,714 and scored one goal in his 19 matches. In his four-year UCLA career, Sofia played in 82 matches, making 80 starts, and was a three-time All-Pac-12 selection. He scored five goals and logged eight assists while helping the Bruins reach the NCAA College Cup semifinals in 2011. Off the field, Sofia earned first-team Capital One Academic All-America honors two times and was selected as a first-team Pac-12 All-Academic honoree three years in a row (2011-13). In 2013, he was named the Pac-12 Men's Soccer Scholar Athlete of the Year while also being a finalist for the Senior CLASS Award.

Senko, an Individual Medley/Backstroke/Butterfly specialist from Winchester, Mass., was named Pac-12 First Team All-Academic all three years she was eligible. A CSCAA Honorable Mention All-American in 2014, she was a part of the team that set the school record in the 400 Freestyle Relay at the NCAA Championships. In the UCLA Top 8 in the 200 Butterfly, Senko was a team captain during her senior campaign and earned the Bruin Pride and Scholar-Athlete awards at the annual team banquet.

Conference Medal winners have been named every year since the 1960-61 academic year. In 2009, the Pac-12 renamed the award the Tom Hansen Conference Medal in honor of Hansen, who retired at the end of June 2009 after serving for 26 years as Commissioner of the Pac-10.
