UCLA is ranked preseason No. 1 by Soccer America, No. 2 by Top Drawer Soccer and No. 4 by the NSCAA. Wake Forest enters the season ranked No. 11 (SA), No. 9 (TDS) and No. 16 (NSCAA). North Carolina is ranked No. 10 (SA), No. 6 (TDS) and No. 22 (NSCAA).

The Bruins went 2-0 in exhibition play last week, recording a 5-2 win over Nebraska Omaha and a 10-0 victory over Los Angeles All-Stars. All-American and MAC Hermann Trophy finalist Leo Stolz led all Bruins in scoring in the two games with eight points (2g, 4a). Kevin De La Torre had a hat trick and Willie Raygoza had three assists in the Los Angeles All-Stars game, and Jordan Vale totaled two goals and one assist over the two games.

The Bruins return seven starters from their last season's team that earned the No. 1 overall seed at the NCAA Tournament. Leading the way is Stolz, the reigning Pac-12 Player of the Year and the top returning vote-getter in the MAC Hermann Trophy race. Also back is Soccer America MVP second-team goalkeeper Earl Edwards Jr., who started all 20 matches for UCLA in 2013 and played every minute of every match, recording seven shutouts.

Head coach Jorge Salcedo brings in the nation's No. 1 recruiting class, led by Gatorade National Player of the Year Abu Danladi and U.S. Youth National Team player Chase Gasper. Gasper was just called up to the U-20 National Team for a Sept. 1-10 international training camp in Argentina. Also new to the program is transfer Larry Ndjock, who scored 12 goals and 25 points for Loyola Maryland a year ago. Ndjock ranked second in the nation with 0.86 goals per game.

UCLA has a total of five players ranked in Top Drawer Soccer's Top 100, led by the top-ranked Stolz. Defender Michael Amick is 13th, Ndjock is 71st, defender Aaron Simmons ranks 78th, and Edwards ranks 95th.

UCLA is 34-8-5 all-time in season openers since beginning NCAA play in 1967. The Bruins' all-time record against Wake Forest is 1-2. The Demon Deacons won the last meeting, 2-0, in Winston-Salem in the 2009 NCAA Tournament. UCLA's lone victory in the series came in 1990 (Salcedo's freshman year), 2-0 in overtime in Los Angeles. The Bruins are 2-0-2 against North Carolina, with the last meeting coming in the 2011 NCAA semifinals. The Tar Heels advanced to the championship on penalty kicks and went on to win the NCAA title. UCLA's last victory in the series was a 1-0 overtime win in Durham in 1995.
