Kenny Arena Hired as Head Coach at Florida International
By: UCLA Athletics

March 2, 2012

Los Angeles, Calif. - UCLA men's soccer assistant coach Kenny Arena has been named the new head coach of the Florida International men's soccer program and will not return to the Bruins next season. Arena will take over for previous head coach Munga Eketebi, who compiled a record of 27-53-9 in five seasons at the helm of Florida International.

Arena was an assistant under head coach Jorge Salcedo for four years at UCLA and helped lead the Bruins to three Pac-12 titles, three NCAA quarterfinal appearances and a College Cup appearance in 2011. He was also the liaison for academics during his time at UCLA. With Arena's help, the Bruins produced 35 All-Pac-12 selections, two Pac-12 Players of the Year and two Freshmen of the Year, as well as five NSCAA All-Americans and 11 MLS draft picks in the last four years. The Bruins also produced an outstanding 25 Pac-12 All-Academic selections in Arena's tenure, going from just three selections his first year to 11 selections in 2011. Along with Salcedo and fellow assistant coaches Eddie Soto and Patrick Seymour, UCLA was able to bring in the number three ranked recruiting class in 2009 and the number one overall class in 2010.

Prior to his time at UCLA, Arena was an assistant coach at George Mason in 2007 and a volunteer coach for the University of Virginia in 2006. He also served as the head coach of the U16 LA Galaxy Academy Team for two seasons and led his squad to the 2010-11 USSDA National and SoCal Division championships, as well as the 2011 U-17 MLS Generation Adidas Cup. Arena also played three seasons in Major League Soccer, spending 2003 and 2004 with the NY/NJ MetroStars and the 2005 season with DC United after playing for four years at the University of Virginia from 1999-2002. Arena's father, Bruce, is currently the general manager/head coach of the 2011 MLS Cup Champion Los Angeles Galaxy and was the head coach of the U.S. men's national team from 1998-2006.

"Kenny Arena has been a tremendous asset to our staff and the UCLA Soccer program over the past four years, and he will be missed," head coach Jorge Salcedo said. "With that being said, our program is a place for personal and professional development for both the student-athletes and our coaches. Kenny has grown and developed into a very good coach and he will hit the ground running from day one at FIU. We wish Kenny the best and look forward to seeing him succeed in his new endeavor."
