Josh Canales Named Pac-10 Player of the Week

May 14, 2001

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - UCLA senior second baseman Josh Canales has been named Pac-10 Baseball Player of the Week for May 7-May 14, Commissioner Tom Hansen annouced today.

Canales, from Carson, Calif., hit .647 over four games last week, helping the Bruins to an upset win over then-No. 1 Cal State Fullerton and two victories over Oregon State. He went 11-for-17 at the plate, knocking in three runs and scoring four. He also stole two bases.

He helped defeat No. 1 Cal State Fullerton by going 2-for-3 with a walk and a sacrifice hit. He drove in UCLA's second run in the second inning, and walked and scored in the fourth en route to a 9-3 win over the Titans.

Canales played a critical role in Friday's win. He was 3-for-5, and his third hit was the biggest one. With two outs and the tying run in third base, Canales hit a chopper up the middle that the shortstop barehanded and threw to first. Canales beat the throw, allowing the game-tying run to score and send the game into extra innings, where the Bruins won, 5-3.

In Saturday's game, he was also very clutch, going 3-for-5 with a sacrifice hit. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, and the Bruins down by one run, Canales hit a single to keep the Bruins alive. He advanced to third on a Brian Baron single, and scored the game-tying run to force the game into extra innings, where the Bruins won 7-6.

In Sunday's game, he was 3-for-4 with a walk to improve his Pac-10 batting average to.446. He is on pace to break UCLA's Pac-10 batting average record of .429, set by Steve Klausen in 1967.

He has a 20-game hitting streak, and has hit safely in 35 of his last 36 games.

The Player of the Week honor is the first for Canales in his career, and the 35th selection all-time for UCLA.

USC's Rik Currier was named Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week.
