Five Make Championship Finals on Day Three of Pac-12's

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - Junior Noelle Tarazona reached the Championship Finals in the 400 Individual Medley and the 100 Butterfly on Friday, while seniors Lauren Baker (400 IM) and Ting Quah (100 Fly) and freshmen Annika Lenz (3-Meter Diving) and Linnea Mack (100 Backstroke) also reached the A races during the third day of the Pac-12 Swimming and Diving Championships at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center.

The morning preliminaries began with all three Bruins making the evening finals in the 400 IM. Tarazona finished fifth with a 4:14.68, while Baker improved on her NCAA 'B' time with a season-best 4:16.88, seventh overall in the morning. Sophomore Arlyn Upshaw advanced to the C Final with a 4:22.13.

A pair of Bruins had a swim-off to advance to the Championship Final of the 100 Fly. Tarazona and Quah each swam a 52.97, tied for the seventh-best prelim time with USC's Jasmine Tosky. In a three-person swim-off for two spots in the A Final, Tarazona had a career-best 52.71 to improve her 'B' time and also move into fourth on UCLA's all-time list. Quah recorded a 52.79, a season high and an improvement on her 'B' mark to out-swim Tosky, who finished third in the swim-off (52.94), as both Bruins made the A Final.

Advancing to the B Final of the 100 Fly was sophomore Katie Kinnear, who was 11th in the morning with a 53.12. Making the C Final was sophomore Madison Applegate, who had a career-best 54.13 to place 17th.

Two Bruins reached the C Final in the 200 Freestyle with season-best times. Juniors Ally Loper (1:48.08) and Kacey Milligan (1:48.15) finished 17th and 18th, respectively.

In the 100 Breaststroke, junior Jessica Khojasteh reached the B Final with the 16th-best prelim swim (1:02.53). A quartet of Bruins made the C Final. Junior Taylor Carlson (20th, season-best 1:03.32), freshman Ashley Tse (21st, 1:03.71), senior Emily Weir (22nd, season-best 1:03.75) and freshman Maggie Burton (23rd, season-best 1:03.80) made the evening session.

UCLA populated all three finals in the 100 Backstroke. Mack was seventh (53.59), freshman Madison White ninth (53.76) and Kinnear was 20th (54.98) to make the A, B and C Finals, respectively.

The morning session wrapped up with the 3-Meter Diving. Lenz set a career-best score of 329.80 in her six dives, the second-highest total in the preliminaries. Senior Paulina Guzman was 10th (272.75), followed by sophomore Montana Monahan (23rd, 239.40), freshman Danni Repper (25th, 226.65) and senior Haley McNamara (26th, 226.55).

The evening finals began with the 400 IM. Tarazona was seventh in the Championship Final with a time of 4:14.62, while Baker was eighth (4:17.74). Upshaw was fifth in the C Final and 21st overall (4:22.47).

It was another 7-8 finish in the 100 Fly. Tarazona swam a 53.14, while Quah had a 53.20. In the B Final, Kinnear was fifth and 13th overall (53.50), while in the C Final, Applegate was third and 18th overall (54.44).

Milligan won the C Final of the 200 Free (17th overall), swimming a 1:47.95, which improved her season best and gave her an NCAA 'B' qualifying time. Loper was fourth in the race (20th overall) with a 1:48.59.

Khojasteh was sixth in the B Final (14th overall) of the 100 Breast with a 1:02.16. The Bruins had half of the representatives of the C Final, posting the fourth through seventh positions. Tse was 20th overall (1:03.20), followed by Weir (season-best 1:03.34), Carlson (1:03.43) and Burton (1:03.98).

In the 100 Back, Mack was eighth in the A Final with a 53.83. White claimed first in the B race with a career-best 53.16. It improved her NCAA 'B' time and moved her from fourth to third on UCLA's all-time list in the 100 Back. Kinnear was seventh (23rd overall) in the C Final with a 55.65.

In the 3-Meter Diving Final, Lenz cracked the 300-point mark again, recording a 319.55 in her six dives, good for sixth place.

The evening concluded with the 400 Medley Relay. White, Khojasteh, Quah and senior Kathryn Murphy finished sixth with a time of 3:37.16.

Through three days, the Bruins are fourth with 619.5 points.

The final day of the Championships starts with the Women's Platform prelims at 10 a.m. on Saturday. At 11 a.m., the swimming begins with the prelims of the 200 Back, 100 Free, 200 Breast and 200 Fly. The 1650 Free starts at 4 p.m., with the fastest heat kicking off the evening session at 6 p.m. The 200 Back, 100 Free, 200 Breast, 200 Fly and Platform diving finals will precede the 400 Free Relay to close out the Championships.
