Woepse Places Ninth In Pole Vault at World University Games

UCLA pole vaulter Mike Woepse placed ninth in the pole vault at the World University Games in Kazan, Russia with a mark of 17-4.50/5.30m.

Woepse, who will be a senior in 2013-14, had the following series of vaults – 16-4.75/5.00m, made on second attempt; 16-10.75/5.15m, made on third attempt; 17-4.50/5.30m, made on first attempt and 17-8.50/5.40m, unsuccessful on three attempts.

The gold medalist of the event was USA's Gavin Kendricks from the University of Mississippi (18-4.50/5.60m, first attempt), with Japan’s Seito Yamamoto capturing silver (18-4.50/5.60m, third attempt) and Kazakhstan’s Nikita Filippov getting the bronze (18-0.50/5.50m).

As a junior co-captain last spring for the Bruins, Woepse was the Pac-12 pole vault champion (17-11). He earned first-team All-America honors at the 2013 NCAA Indoor Championships with a seventh-place finish (18-0.50). In 2012, he placed second at the NCAA Outdoor, earning All-America honors, with a height of 18-2.50, which was a personal best and the No. 4 all-time mark at UCLA. He had previously earned honorable mention All-America honors at the 2011 NCAA Outdoor with a 20th-place finish and height of 16-4.75.
