Release:  08/02/2013
UCLA will have five track & field representatives at the 2013 IAAF World Championships in Moscow, Russia from Aug. 10-18. Competing for Team USA will be Bruin volunteer coach Sharon Day in the heptathlon, UCLA alumna Dawn Harper in the women’s 100m hurdles, and UCLA alumnus Brandon Johnson in the men’s 800m. Representing Australia will be Bruin senior-to-be Julian Wruck in the men’s discus, and competing for Sweden will be UCLA senior-to-be Marcus Nilsson in the decathlon.

Wruck, from Brisbane, Australia, travels to Moscow as as one of the top men’s discus throwers in the world. During the 2013 collegiate season, he set the collegiate record (223-7/68.16m), won his second NCAA Outdoor title (213-0/64.94m) was the Pac-12 champion (214-7/65.41m, meet record) and holds the conference and school records. He was undefeated in eight collegiate events and recorded each of the Top 27 collegiate throws in 2013. Wruck is UCLA’s first-ever finalist for the Bowerman Award, which is awarded annually to the top collegiate athlete in NCAA track & field (VOTE for Wruck for the Bowerman). He won the discus title at last spring’s Australian Championships and represented Australia at the 2012 London Olympic Games. He won his first NCAA crown in 2011 competing for Texas Tech.

Nilsson, from Malmo, Sweden, earned first-team All-America honors for the second time in his career, placing third in the decathlon at the 2013 NCAA Outdoors with a personal-best 8,104 points (No. 3 UCLA all-time). In 2012, Nilsson placed second in the Pac-12 meet, and at the NCAA Outdoor, again earned first-team All-America acclaim by finishing fifth (at the time, with a personal-best 7,823 points which was No. 5 UCLA all-time).

Day, who is beginning her second year as a volunteer heptathlon coach on the Bruin staff, won last June’s heptathlon crown at the USA Outdoor Championships with a then-world-leading mark of 6,550 points, a personal-best and No. 5 U. S. all-time. At the 2012 Olympics in London, she was the highest placing U. S. heptathlete (16th, 6,232 points). Day won her first USA Outdoor heptathlon championship in 2011 and is a three-time USA Outdoor heptathlon runner-up (2009/2010/2012). A graduate of Cal Poly, Day was the 2005 NCAA Outdoor women's high jump champion and a member of the U. S. team at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing as a high jumper. Day's head coach at Cal Poly was Jack Hoyt, who is entering his second season as the Bruins' Associate Head Coach.

In recent years, Harper has been one of the world’s most successful women’s 100m hurdlers. As the current Diamond League champion, she earned an automatic bye to the World Championships, allowing Team USA to take four women's 100m hurdlers to Moscow. Harper, who is coached by Bobby Kersee, has a PR of 12.37 (2012) and is the 2008 Olympic gold medalist and 2012 Olympic silver medalist. She is also a two-time USA Outdoor 100m hurdles champion (2009/2012). As a Bruin, Harper was a three-time NCAA Outdoor All-America (2004-06) in the 100m hurdles and a three-time NCAA Indoor All-America (2004-06) in the 60m hurdles. Her mark of 12.80 (2006) is No. 3 all-time at UCLA.

Johnson has made the transition from 400m hurdler to one of the nation’s top men’s 800m runners. In the 800m final at the 2013 USA Outdoor Championships, he placed third (1:43.97) to become a member of Team USA at the World Championships. As a Bruin, Johnson is one of the school's elite 400m hurdlers. In 2005, his mark of 48.59 ranked No. 3 all-time in UCLA history. Johnson is a two-time NCAA Outdoor All-America in the 400m hurdles (2005/2007) and a 2006 NCAA Indoor All-America on UCLA’s 1600m relay that placed seventh.

All events of the 2013 IAAF World Championships will be held at Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, the biggest sports stadium in Russia with a seating capacity of over 78,000. Luzhniki Stadium was the home of the 1980 Summer Olympic Games.

Universal Sports Network and NBC will air 46 hours of the 2013 IAAF World Championships from Aug. 10-18. Highlighting the broadcast team, along with Tom Hammond and Lewis Johnson, will be Bruin track & field greats Ato Boldon and Dwight Stones. UniversalSports.com will also stream all events live, in addition to posting daily video highlights and news from Moscow.
