LOS ANGELES – As the 2014 season looms less than a week away the UCLA track and field program returned to historic Drake Stadium for the first time this year to participate in workouts on the new Mondo surface that was just installed.
“The teams are very excited to tryout the new track surface,” UCLA director of track and field, Mike Maynard said. “I think it's is beautiful and it's nice to finally get the old red track out of Drake Stadium.”
The Mondo product that was placed is the latest generation of Mondo. It is the same surfacing used at the 2012 London Olympic Games, and is expected to be one of the only installations of its type in the USA.
“What makes this Mondo surface exceptional is that it serves as a great training track, as well as a top notch competition surface,” Maynard said. “This Mondo Super X 720 is the cutting edge, and is the latest generation in world class sport surfacing.”
The project started in November and more phases of the Drake Stadium upgrade will continue throughout the year.
“I want to thank Jim and Carol Collins for making this all come to pass,” Maynard added. “Without their generosity and belief in the student-athletes at UCLA, none of this would've been possible.”
The indoor season will start at the Northern Arizona Invitational on Friday, January 24, in Flagstaff. The outdoor season is set to begin with a dual meet against Washington State on March 22 at Drake Stadium.
