Bruins Shine at USATF Junior Track and Field Championships

EUGENE, Ore. – Current and future Bruins showcased the young talent at UCLA at the USATF Junior Track and Field Championships this past weekend, held at historic Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon. After the two day event four Bruins qualified for the IAAF World Junior Championships.

Leading the way for UCLA at the USA Juniors was Braheme Days. Days led a 1-2 charge in the shot put for the Bruins, uncorking the 6k weight 65-5.50. Following Days was UCLA signee Amir Patterson, who recorded a mark of 63-2.75 to place second. Both will head back to Eugene for the World Junior Championships on July 22-27.

Also qualifying for the world juniors was another signee, Misana Viltz. The California state champ in the 110 hurdles placed second in the event with a time of 13.42. UCLA distance redshirt Richard Ho will compete for Chinese Taipei in the 10,000m as he placed sixth with a time of 31:28.91.

Other standout performances on the track for the Bruins were by Emily Scharmann in the steeple with a fifth place finish at 11:01.25. On the men’s side Max Davis placed seventh in the steeple with a time of 9:35.16.

In the field, UCLA signee Stamatia Scarvelis placed fourth in the shot put with a mark of 50-0.50 and also finished seventh in the discus with a throw of 155-2. Fellow signee Ashlie Blake placed 10th in the shot (46-3.50) and 11th in the discus (143-0).

In the men’s discus, Days placed sixth with a throw of 187-9 while Patterson followed in ninth at 176-0 and Dotun Ogundeji was 14th at 164-1. Zach Thomas rounded out the weekend with a leap of 22-7 in the long jump to place 14th.
