LOS ANGELES – 2012 Gatorade National Boys Track and Field Athlete of the Year Abraham Hall has enrolled at UCLA and will join the Bruin track and field team. Hall comes to UCLA from South Grand Prairie High School in Grand Prairie, Texas, where he etched his name as one of the top sprinters in prep history.
"The entire Bruin track and field family is excited to welcome Abraham to Westwood,” director of UCLA track and field Mike Maynard said. “He is truly an excellent and talented young man, and I believe he is a perfect fit for both our team and UCLA.”
Hall sprinted his way into the record books by clocking a 100-meter time of 10.19 at the 2012 Class 5A state championships. The 100-meter time was the fastest in the country in 2012 and ranks as the eighth fastest in prep history.
"With the addition of Abraham to our team, the restoration of UCLA sprints and Bruin track and field are on track for excellence," Maynard said. "Abraham's 100/200m times in high school are nothing short of spectacular. I believe that this is one of the most talented young sprinters in the world of his generation. I consider Abraham to be a cornerstone, and indicator of our future emphasis in recruiting efforts in the sprints."
He also scorched the oval in the 200 meters, clocking a 20.58 at the same meet to help lead the Warriors to a fourth place finish. The time of 20.58 ranked as the second fastest time in the country and as the 18th fastest in high school history.
Hall also won the 100m at the Great Southwest Classic and finished third in the 100 at the adidas Dream Mile. He also competed at the USA Junior Outdoor Championships in Bloomington, Ind., in 2012. For his efforts Hall was also named the Dallas Morning News Boys Track and Field Athlete of the Year.
"I want to recognize Coach John Henry Johnson, who has done an excellent job building and nurturing a relationship with Abraham throughout the recruiting process,” Maynard added. “In this process, Coach Johnson has shown what he has to offer his alma mater in recruiting excellence."
Hall posted times of 10.50 or better in eight races in high school in 2012 and placed first in all but two finals he competed in. He also ran a sub 21.00 in the 200m twice and won every final event he started.
Hall maintained a 3.71 GPA in high school and was a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He also participated in community service initiatives with that group in addition to donating his time to local elementary schools and youth track programs. Hall also played safety on the football team at South Grand Prairie.
