Eleven Bruins Set to Compete at NCAA Track and Field Championships

LOS ANGELES – The UCLA track and field team will be represented by 11 student-athletes at the 2014 NCAA Track and Field Championships. The four-day event will begin on Wednesday, June 11 and conclude on Saturday, June 14. The meet will be held at historic Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon.

Eight of the 11 Bruins will be making their first trip to the NCAA outdoor championships. The three returning has had success at the meet in years past. Senior Julian Wruck won the discus last season and won the title in 2011 while at Texas Tech. Junior Kylie Price has earned All-American honors at the two previous outdoor championships. Senior Matt Kosecki earned All-American accolades at the 2012 championships.

On the women’s side, making their first appearance at the meet is senior Natasha Kolbo, juniors Brea Buchanan, Zibby Boyer and Alexis Walker and sophomore Trinity Wilson. The men’s side will feature first-timers sophomores Nick Hartle and Nicholas Scarvelis and redshirt freshman Cody Danielson.

Based on the results from the regionals, the Bruins are in good shape to make some noise in Eugene. In the 100m hurdles Wilson ranks 16th with her prelim time of 13.22 while Buchanan checks in at 22nd with a 13.32.

In the pole vault, Kolbo ranks 17th at 13-7 but has cleared a personal best 13-10.50 this season. Boyer ranks 20th in the high jump at a personal best 5-9.75 while Price is 21st in the long jump at 20-2.25. Price has soared 21-1.25 this season. Walker also checks in at 21st in the heptathlon with a personal best score of 5,409.

On the men’s side, Wruck ranks fifth in the discus with a prelim throw of 204-10 but has thrown a season best of 213-3. Kosecki follows in 16th with a 190-7. He has thrown a season best 196-8. Scarvelis is in the top-10 in the shot put ranked eighth with a throw of 64-4, just under his personal best of 64-4.50.

Hartle is currently 15th in the 800m with a 1:48.61 but has run a personal best 1:47.51 this season. Rounding out the men’s squad is Danielson in the javelin. He ranks 24th with a throw of 213-11 and has a personal best of 219-7.

The meet will begin for the Bruins with Price in the long jump on Wednesday, June 11 at 4:15 p.m. PT. On the track, Hartle will compete in the 800m semifinals that evening at 4:30 p.m. Also on the first day will be Scarvelis in the shot put at 5:30 p.m.
