WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Junior Stephany LaRosa was named Pac-12 Conference Player of the Week on Monday after helping the Bruins to a doubleheader win over UC Santa Barbara and a three-game sweep of Utah last week.
LaRosa reached base in all five games, homering in three of them and recording eight hits in 13 at-bats for a .615 batting average with eight runs batted in. She scored four times and walked twice.
LaRosa opened the week with home runs in both ends of a Wednesday doubleheader against UC Santa Barbara. With the Bruins up 1-0 in the fifth inning, LaRosa hit a two-run shot to put UCLA up 3-0. It would prove to be the game-winning RBI, as the Bruins won the first contest 5-1. In game two of the twinbill, LaRosa had a three-hit game with two singles and another homer. She singled home a run in her first at-bat in the first inning, hit a two-run homer in the third and singled again in the fourth.
On Friday in the weekend series opener against Utah, LaRosa reached in all three plate appearances to extend her streak to seven straight times reaching base. She hit her third homer in as many games in the first inning, singled home a run in the second and walked in the third.
On Saturday, LaRosa extended her reached base streak to eight consecutive with an RBI single in the first inning. She would go 2-for-4 in the game with a single in the fourth. On Sunday, LaRosa did not record a hit, but had two productive at-bats, walking in the first and sacrificing a runner over in the fourth, which eventually led to the Bruins’ first run of the contest.
LaRosa is second on the team with seven home runs, fourth with a .347 batting average and tied for fourth with 23 runs batted in.
LaRosa has earned Pac-12 Player of the Week awards every season, receiving the honor on April 16, 2012 and April 22, 2013.
UCLA, which has received 71 Pac-10/12 Player of the Week awards all-time, has earned six weekly awards this season, the most in the Pac-12. This is the fourth Pac-12 Player of the Week, as LaRosa joins senior Alyssa Tiumalu (Feb. 11) and sophomore Mysha Sataraka (Feb. 25 and March 17). Junior Ally Carda has won two Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week honors on Feb. 25 and March 25.
The top-ranked Bruins travel to Eugene this weekend to face #2 Oregon on Friday (3 p.m.), Saturday (3 p.m.) and Sunday (1 p.m.). All three games will be televised live on Pac-12 Networks.
