EUGENE, Ore. - Junior Stephany LaRosa had two hits, including a home run, while driving in three, sophomore Allexis Bennett and freshman Gabrielle Maurice also had two hits and junior Ally Carda added a three-run homer, but the top-ranked Bruins dropped a 9-7 decision at #3 Oregon on Friday at Howe Field.
The Bruins fall to 33-3 overall and 8-2 in Pac-12 play, while the Ducks improve to 33-4 and 7-0 in league action.
The Bruins had nine hits and also received four walks and three hit by pitches, but left 10 on base in the game. Defensively, UCLA made four errors, leading to four unearned runs.
Carda (19-2) struck out four in 4 1/3 innings, allowing eight runs (five earned), nine hits and one walk. Sophomore Paige McDuffee pitched in relief and fanned one in 1 2/3 innings, giving up an unearned run and two hits.
The first inning saw the Bruins score once, but the Ducks net three. In the top half, freshman Delaney Spaulding was hit by a pitch with one out, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a double to center from LaRosa to make it 1-0.
Oregon took the lead with a three-spot in its first at-bat. Courtney Ceo and Alyssa Gillespie had back-to-back bunt singles to open the frame, and one out later, Alexa Peterson walked to load the bases. One out later, Janelle Lindvall hit a line drive off the tip of the glove of a jumping Bennett in deep center, as the hit cleared the bases to give the Ducks a 3-1 lead.
The Ducks tacked on an unearned run in the third. Janie Takeda reached second on a dropped ball by Spaulding in shallow left-center, and one out later, moved to third on an illegal pitch. One out later, Lindvall singled up the middle to plate Takeda with Oregon’s fourth run.
In the fourth, two more Bruin errors led to two more Duck unearned runs. Nikki Udria reached on a Spaulding throwing error to open the inning and scored on a triple to center by Ceo to make it 5-1. One out later, Takeda laid down a squeeze bunt in front of the plate, but Carda bobbled it, allowing Ceo to score the Ducks’ sixth run.
UCLA cut its deficit in half with two in the fifth. Spaulding was hit to open the inning and came home on LaRosa’s eighth homer of the season off the scoreboard in right to make it 6-3.
The Ducks countered with two runs in their half of the fifth, as Lindvall and Koral Costa had back-to-back homers to make it 8-3.
The Ducks pushed across yet another unearned run in the sixth. Ceo led off with a double, and one out later, Takeda reached on a fielding error by McDuffee, allowing Ceo to reach third. After Takeda stole second, Peterson flied out to right, with Ceo coming home on the sacrifice fly to make it 9-3.
UCLA made things interesting in the seventh. With one out, freshman Jelly Felix reached on a fielding error by Kailee Cuico at first, Hall singled up the middle and Maurice walked. Bennett followed with a tapper to short, as Maurice was retired at second, but Felix scored to trim the deficit to 9-4. Carda then hit a three-run homer to left, her sixth bomb of the season, to make it 9-7, but the Bruins were unable to bring the tying run to the plate.
The Bruins and the Ducks continue their three-game series on Saturday at 3 p.m. The contest will be aired live on Pac-12 Networks National and Los Angeles.
